What to CLA first

I've got some money saved for only ONE cla and have to choose between three of my RFs. They're all in fine cosmetic shape (check the camera gear photo link in my signature), but could each use a general relube and view/range finder cleaning. In addition they each have a specific problem. My Contax III (with working meter!!) has a broken shutter curtain, the Contax IIa has hanging slow speeds and the Nikon S2 has a hanging transport lever and a squeeking dry set of gears.

Which one would you do first?

Hmmm, you're putting me on the wrong leg. I had half decided to cla the Contax IIa because it's got such a nice low noise shutter. The Nikon's noise is a rifle shot in comparison....

I don't know how many lenses you have, or plan to use, but the Contax III is able to focus properly cheap and potentially excellent FSU lenses from 35 to 135 mm. With the IIa, you lose the 35mm possibility. With the Nikon, the 1.5/50, the 85 and the 135 are iffy wide open. So... I'd do the III first.

Then again, the IIa is the most beautiful.. ;)

I too support the Nikon for a paid CLA, but because of opposite reasons than the previous writers.

For the Nikon you will pay. The Contaxes you will do yourself, and end with better cameras than the paid CLA Nikon. But you need the Nikon for the time being until you finnish yourself both Contaxes CLA.

Lately a not new member of RFF re-emerged, signing as f2eyelevel, and he knows all what you have to do for a Contax CLA, and upon his explicit declarations I don't think he will take advantage of you and ask money. For your broken curtains another consacrated expert: Zorkikat.

Ask them. They die to help anyone around.

Cheers,
Ruben

Ruben is right... CLA the Nikon, and then learn how to deal with the Contaxes :) After you fix them, you will feel really good :)

I am waiting for asahi ribbons to finish my job on my Kievs :)

HuubL; You are an M4 man, no? What about spending the money on one of those M4s? I am thinking of a visit to CRR Luton...a black paint M4 with those lovely M2/3 levers? Doesn't that get your camera-mojo running? If I were you and had this dilemma, I'd slide the contaxes and the s2 out of the way, and do the impractical, the cosmetic and gorgeous! Hello CRR Luton, this is my M4, do your magic. But that's just me:)

OK, you convinced me. I just returned from my visit to Will van Manen who is going to cla the Nikon S2.

BTW, S2s have never been sold in the Netherlands and I think not many in Europe either. Yet, Will had another S2 waiting for a cla. I wonder if there is another Dutchman here on RFF who's getting his S2 cla'd...

This is uncalled for....have you missed taking your pills again?

At least I KNOW (to the limited extent based on what I've done) what I am talking about when it comes to replacing ribbons and the possible substitutes for them. I don't speculate, nor pretend to know about the topic. I don't engage in verbose, longwinded posts which lead to nothing but confusion, with the aim of taking relevance out and replacing it with your silly notions- as you just did in this thread.

Do you really speak from experience when you try to show any 'expertise'? I doubt if you've ever done any shutter work yourself.

Are you now in the business of ordaining, annointing, and consEcrating (correctly spelled with an E, not an A after S) Kiev ministers/priests/rabbis/imams?
