What will happen when the digital imaging wave dies

You seem to be equating film with lasting value and digital with shoddy transitory junk.

Nothing supports this view. The actual medium used has never defined the artist. The artist chooses his medium or uses the materials and processes at hand.

In the Newtonian world light behaved as a wave (think analog film) but in the Quantum world it can behave as a wave or a particle (think digital media). Both are appropriate. Both are valid.
 
I know A LOT of women who have gotten into digital photography and have declared themselves to be pros a month after obtaining their first camera.

Of course. Modern cameras do not require any technical skill anymore... ;)
