What would make the M9 a war correspondent's ideal camera?

Why is it necessary for a camera to be silent in a war? Do soldiers use silencers on their assault rifles?

Because it's still an extra source of noise. As a soldier you don't want the photographer to give away your position if it can be avoided, and as a photographer you don't want to be told not to take pictures because your camera is too loud.

(That said, I wouldn't expect the situation to arise very often where camera noise is a problem.)

bring a camera that fits in a ziploc. if it don't fit, make sure you don't own it.

Depends how deeply you are embedded, and how long you expect to go without power. Whatever is taken for digital imaging (and remember that video output may now be deemed essential), I think an OM1 with 50/1.8 and 28/3.5 would make a tiny and indestructible backup.

In the Leica Museum in Solms there is a lens that took a bullet. A Summilux 50 iirc.
