I had the X100 for 10 days and traded it in at full refund for the camera I actually wanted which was the M9 3 weeks ago and couldn't be happier. X100 was a nice little camera but I wanted the M9. You can waste a lot of money buying a cheaper alternative to what you really want if in fact you will eventually buy what you want in the end anyway.

If you can really afford the M9, get that. If not... Carry the Lumix G1 with 20/1.7 and 14-45, you already own and wait for the X100 like you intended. ISO 800 with the 1.7 indoors will be fine no?

This looks like a conundrum if I ever saw one.

I have a gf1 (similar if not same performance to the g1) but the more I look at the situation presented here the more I think it might be best to use something like a Nikon d7000 with the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX for the low available light conditions that you expect to encounter, albeit without a zoom.

I guess you would have to decide about carrying a zoom lens as well but that 35mm goes beautifully with it. Being a backup camera you probably won't want to lug around big heavy glass or outlay a lot of money for something not quite what you want to keep in the long term. I suppose if it still doesn't suit your regular photography needs after the trip you could sell it for a small (expected) depreciation. Its not a terribly expensive setup so the loss wont be high if it has hardly been used. I have used my brother's newly acquired d7000 and seen lab prints from jpeg off the camera (no post processing other than in-camera jpeg processing) with the above mentioned 35mm. All I could say was wow. I'm sure that shooting Raw you would probably be able to get the large print sizes you require.
In my own opinion It performs noticeably better than my gf1 with the 20 f1.7 in low light conditions from about iso400 and beyond. I'm no camera reviewer but I know what I see. I was extremely surprised at how much better it performed in available light conditions than my panasonic although the compromise here is weight if you want to carry one of the bigger zoom lenses as well. I hear the small (kit) zoom lenses are pretty light though but I'm not sure about performance or if you can adapt some of your existing glass to fit the camera body.

I'm really interested to see what you finally decide on. So many areas that require a compromise whichever way you go.

Is there a difference in image quality between a GF1, and a G1 ?

I doubt it. The GF1 has a non SLR form factor which made it popular. It can also do video. Your G1 as a nice built in evf that the gf1 lacks.

I took my gf1 to Europe, late last year, Hawaii in Jan 2011, and Key West for spring break. The kit was camera, 14-45mm, and 20mm lens. I was pretty satisfied with it.

Take a look at photos taken with your gear on flickr.

There are also reviews of the gf1 by professional photographers who want to use a small camera for travel.

Decision time !

Decision time !

I have just been offered a "Demo" Leica M9 with a 1 year Leica Warranty, in Like New condition, by a reputable seller, for $5995 ! (And no sign of any X100 yet...). This seems to me to be a substantial savings.

I have to decide by Monday

Easy...get theM9! Then, bring it to Atlanta so we can go on an excursion around town!:)

EDIT...why on earth would you choose an untried/not even here yet, camera over an M9??? Apples and oranges.

It will be a pleasure !

It is almost $6000 cheaper, and I haven't actually held either in my hand ! Of course, I agree that they are not at all similar...

If you believe in DXO marks the Nex is right up there with the M9. It would probably be my choice. But then again if you prefer shooting in manual like me none of the EVIL cameras are good in that area. But I also don't think I would risk a road trip with a $6000.00 camera unless it came with a body guard. I would be so worried it would get lost or stolen I wouldn't be able to have fun. My vote is for the Nex. It looks so much like a P&S thieves probably wouldn't even give you a second look.
