what's a good solid M body?

I know its morbid but if you had to you could probably beat someone to death with an M and then take pictures for evidence. The Hexar has a great rep but probably wouldn't stand up to the test.

I'm totally serious. The rewind issue is that after putting a few hundred rolls through the M4Ps and M6's, the washer in the rewind crank jams up and the camera has to be sent off for repair. This is the most common failure with the M6, I see threads on it here, and on other forums at least every week.

The M2 and M3 are not viable, they're too old and clunky and are not light tight as I use very high speed sensitive films. Also, I don't want to have to use funky goggles with 35mm, so the M3 is out. The MP doesn't even have a rewind crank, it has the slow knurled knob. That's too slow. I sometimes need to reload super fast.

So what's the story with the CLE, how can you get the 40 framelines to come up with a 35 asph cron without having to modify the lens?

Well, some are old and clunky, but not all. Some are not light tight, but not all. Some are rusted at the bottom of a lake, too.

Umm...how about an aux finder for the M3? This way you get the most accurate focusing of any M, plus more framelines. Say, the CV mini-finder, tiny, with 28mm and 35mm.

No goggles.

I cannot imagine film speed would have a lot to do with it as if a film leaks light any film is likely to be affected due to it being a rather long exposure!

If your Ms have had rewind issues so quickly it is either plan bad luck or that your technique puts a lot of pressure on them. You can always use a crank atachment with the knob rewinds.

Any well adjusted camera will be less than clunky. If you get an old dog that has not been fired in 20 years what would you expect.

I would say an M6 is the camera, making sure you are not too hard on the rewind and avoid buying an ex pro camera that has done 100,000 rolls.

thanks

good point below on the 100K rolls cameras, but there are no odometers, so how does one know, other than trying, then fixing when needed (which will be soon for those who use a lot of film).

Most all M2s and M3s have foggy images when used with faster films.

Does CV make any good solid M mount bodies? The Leica's are just too old and cheaply made except for the M7. M6's and M4p's all break down in the rewind section and are thus overpriced.

The CL is too small, and I'm not sure if that CLE brings up the right framelines for say the 35/2 asph cron?

Maybe I just need another Hexar AF.

There is no such thing as a robust Leica!

You Need a Nikon S3 re-issue....

I am not remotely a fan of auxilliary finders either. I have one for my 21 f4 and it pisses me off for the same reasons. Sounds like you need a MP! A nice M6 classic that has not had a hard life would surely be a good bet. If a (field type) camera is cosmetically perfect it is a 99% bet it has not been used heavily. Of course the unused ones need a CLA too, but you would be unlikley to have worn out washers etc. There are plenty about that are in the MINT or close to category. If you do use a hell of a lot of film, might be worth learning how to service the washers yourself.

M6j?

M6j?

Yes, I could get the tools and learn how to fix that part myself I suppose.

The M6J had a metal M3 type advance. I wonder if they beefed up the rewind side materials as well? Too bad those are so rare and expensive.
