What's become the rock bottom price ...

Yeah, that "loose bearing" knocking sound was the sound natural to a five cylinder diesel engine, which many of the imported Mercedes had at the time.....when a diesel in a regular production domestic car was a dream.
 
Not many respectable people bought Mercedes in the 1950s. They belonged ex-GIs and people like my high school shop teacher (who, come to think of it, was probably an ex-GI). My Mercedes-Lexus comparison was meant to be a modernday analogy.
 
So, what's the problem with Mercedes? Been driving them for years along with my Toyotas.

Anyways, back to the thread topic...I lost count of how many S3 2000's B&H had. None?

Out of stock. That source is likely dried up. (Unless B&H wants to buy them cheap in Japan and keep reselling them at $2,300 ... but I don't imagine there's enough turnover to make that worthwhile).
 
Because he recognized the superiority of the S3 over the SP when shooting 35mm lenses?

Gable also had a Duesenberg and a boattail speedster.
 
Jon , will you do the " monkey business" for us here on RFF , if you run into a nice chrome S3 kit in the near future?
 
Did any kid ever dream of owning an Exacta?

I did, as a young kid I would see them advertized in Popular Photography magazine, Cambridge Photo, if I am not mistaken, and Jacob Deschin would write these articles extoling the virtues of this Camera,
I did not get one until 2 summers ago.
when I showed the Exakta to my brother, he said, " no wonder they are not in business anymore,you 'd have to be a masochist to use such a monstrosity, what were these east germans thinking".
 
An SP-2005 at $2,500 might just sway my love-hate relationship with the design to the SP. (Some days I love the minifinder, other days, I vastly prefer shooting wide angles with the S3).
 
All this talk of SP prices coming down has me seriously (seriously) considering dumping my beloved M6/40 Summicron combo and taking the leap. And then Jon has to drop news of an "A" used set for less than $3k. Made me throw up a little bit in my mouth.

One of the sublime pleasures of aesthetics is the ability to disagree on ulimates. For me, the finest moment in car design was Triumph's Spitfire. Superficially the cars are very similar, but in the end one will not be mistaken for the other...

Likewise there are a very large number of ways to approach the idea of the best camera design. I won't belabor tbe point, but simply mention that to me, there is a certain beauty to what Zeiss wrought that has not yet been equalled.
