What is your good enough camera to have as your go to when you are out and about in your vehicle doing whatever with your normal kit at home for the opportunity that presents itself for a great shot?

As of now, I have an Olympus IS 1 (100) ZLR in an old case, just because it does a lot, costs nothing, and has good glass. I can always apologize later for the reflex viewing in case of emergency, or just hook up some wires for a sports finder?

Count me in with those with the tripod in the trunk. When I'm traveling, the camera bag and the laptop go into the hotel with me, especially in the heat of summer and dead of winter.

I'll second Chris on it being too hot to leave a camera in the car. Here in Phoenix, it is even too hot for most of the winter. 😀

I also have a tripod in the trunk, but I don't use it nearly as much as I could.

I also have a tripod and a trekpod in my car, if I have to leave a camera I put it in one of those styro foam boxes to insulate only in my office parking space but never outside. I also have a P&S that I bring everyday.

I messed up a camera by leaving it in a hot car in Summer, just for a while too. Maybe the trunk would be okay though.

I'll normally take my Mamiya m645 with me when I think there may be a chance of doing some shooting...
Yesterday, I took my daughter to "The Barn" so she could do a bit of riding (horses)
and the ferrior was there shoeing some horses...I got a roll of some nice shots...developed the roll last night and hope to make a few prints for him soon...

When I went on vacation, I had a Rolleiflex SL66 with three lenses in the trunk, but only while on the road. In the car was a Contax IIa, a Zeiss Ikon Contessa S 310 and a Rolleiflex SL 35 E with four lenses.

Otherwise, I join the legion of others who know it's a terrible idea to keep a camera locked in a hot or freezing cold car.

I was speaking more figuratively rather than literally, and yes my tripod is just above the jack, but of course not the carbon fiber, just one of the the old Leitz Tiltal D's. I have a Manfrotto in Prague as well, under the stairs.

Is a camera stashed somewhere for the times you are not specifically going out to shoot?

I generally do not leave my car in the sun, which is just a rumor in Cleveland regardless. ;-) There is an opening through in the back seat I think for ventilation of the trunk?

Am not sure I would dismiss a camera with all kinds of manual control with ED glass simply as junk. Not my first choice, but certainly serviceable.

If equipment made the photos, then all the dentists would have much better photos on the walls. Am sure most of you could get something out of a disposable.

Edit-- I planned on a Nikonos, the camera I carried when I was young enough to climb mountains in the Rockies -- but I have two that probably have enough parts between them to make one, another project.

Tripod, spare hat, sun screen, bug dope and a pair of rubber boots to slip over my shoes when mucking around in the wet/mud. Holga hangs out in the glove box in cooler weather - too hot here in Maryland now, though.

Quart of oil, quart of transmission fluid, jack, spare tire, and jumper cables.

Have an Olympus XA2 in the glovebox; not hot enough yet to keep cameras out of the car, but it soon will be.

Now you're talking, positive attitude on -- Am I the only one who has the Czech Pionyr? I just figured out how to shift it to 6x6, and it vignettes on 6x4.5, am beyond myself with excitement.

Bakelite battalion, just read the history of the Holga, and how when they improved the lens, people B)((&^ed them out.

Love a happy ending, why did I not invest my 401k in Holgas?

Now I am in trouble, been ignoring an XA2 on an auction. Does it put out the results when you put in the effort? I can live with the zone focus, but no manual exposure? Do you compensate with EI adjustments?

no car, no trunk 😀

But you always have Paris, a walk along Quai Des Grands Augustins or along the "Beach" normally found me something.

I almost booked an apartment near Odeon for a month and just took off.

Have good friends in VilleJuif, so prefer to actually stay near line 7, which also has an exit near the Maison de Photographie? But they seem to be out of town when I arrive. ;-)

I do not think I went out often without a camera in Paris, unless I was only going to Nicolas.

It's fine in the winter, but I get some awfully dark base negatives in the summer months, cause I keep an old Nikon SLR in my car all the time, usually loaded with trix. Just in case ya know. But in my trunk you will find some tools, a tripod (of course, not that I'd ever use it!) a reflector (ok, it's a windshield shade) and lately, a small Weber barbecue.

No, really.
