$200-300 I would think
However, any coated prewar Biogon should be suspected to be a Jupiter 12 fake IMO. Check it out carefully - there are differences, especially the Biogon is smaller with a very slender focus ring and a different latch to release the from the bayonet.

Hi Frank,
I am not an expert but the front and rear caps are FSU are well. If I had to bet, I know where my money would be!

Hard to see but I think its fake - aperture selector doesn't stick out far like on the Biogon, and its black, not chrome like on the Biogon.
Given the origin, almost certainly suspect.

The seller also has an 85/2 "sonnar" in M42 mount. That has to be suspicious!

as a matter of fact, always check about any extra supplied items. In the ebay link above, the lens is supplied with the usual KMZ russian bakelite box. check the rear element of the biogon, it should be as on the photo above. http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19245
Note under the ring under the lens element, marked with the serial number. Jupiter-12 lenses lack this element, and the rear lens element is a bit different, it is also not surrounded by the upper thin ring.

I always wonder how all these wonderful "wartime Carl Zeiss lenses" came to Russia, and kept there for 60 years! It takes me even more wonder how many lenses in Leica thread mount Zeiss supposedly produced..! Quite as many as in their own mount according to some ebay auctions!
But this is a bit more difficult to detect when shipped from America without FSU cases and caps, maybe from second owner....
cheers, Frank

Of course if one had the ability to hand check a lens, it would be easier to figure out what is supposedly true and what has been faked... but we have to rely on common sense, visual identification and other clues ...

The lens is German c. 1940. I do not know what pics you are looking as I have not posted any.
I have a Jupiter 12 it is completely different.

They're looking here - http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7589422093
If you have inspected the lens and know enough to tell its genuine, I'd go for it. I would love to get my hands on one.

If I were JBright 99 I'd be annoyed. Unless I'm misunderstanding, it seems that the discussion of his question about the value of his lens has been diverted to discuss other lenses that clearly are Biogon fakes. The unfortunate implication, probably unintentional, is that his Biogon probably is a J-12 fake. However, I suppose, given the discussion and the many fakes out there, that if JBright99 wants to sell, he should post photos so that the experts here can confirm / assess whether it is genuine.

Sorry Dan, he didn't say he was selling it until 12 posts were made. I merely brought the point up because there are about 10 fake coated biogons for every genuine T coated one. I see them all the time on ebay.
Honestly, I thought he was thinking of buying one, in which case I could have been doing him a big favour. If he wants to post his lens here with clear photos, nobody has anything to worry about.

The same for me... the question "what's is worth?" without pictures isn't to answer in case of wartime Carl Zeiss lenses without detailled pictures.
If someone can send me clear pictures of Jupiter-12 and CZJ Biogon 2.8/35 in comparison I would update my Zeiss lens fakes page. When it was initially created I wasn't yet aware that the Biogon is target to fake as well as the Sonnars.
Cheers, Frank
