Look what the postman left this morning at my home 😉:

The lens is beautiful, it focuses perfectly on my S3 2000, I think I'm going to shoot a roll of slides.

I'm sooo happy !

I found the lens at a local french internet buy and sell site. Le bon coin, it's the name, "the good corner". The rear cap was a Kiev 4. It was some sort of miracle that happens not very often. I intend to test it, for a while, then make it go to a new home again, because I have enough equipement right now. And it's not everyday you pick up one of these !

Didn't know that these were even made in Nikon mount. I have seen one or two on eBay that claimed to be Contax mount, though. Please post some pics when you get a chance.

Looks nice on the S2

Awesome looking lens. Lemonsha in the Ginza, Tokyo has had one of these for sale in Nikon S-mount for 400,000 yen since I can remember. Funny thing is it has a rectangular hood on it, which makes absolutely no sense for an internal mount lens. Looking forward to seeing some pics taken with the lens!

So this is a $4000 lens! It is beautiful. If I had a test for 50mm lenses, maybe you could mail it for the test? [smile]

I've spent the afternoon walking down my town with this combo and a Superia 200 film. I've given my film to developp at a local camera shop. Here are the results, scanned in Nikon Coolscan IV and only minor retouching in brightness.

It's far better from what I've expected.

It has a real Sonnar looking

Thanks for sharing, it seems to be a great little performer, I thought the corners would be darker, guess I was wrong. Seems like it covers the 35mm FOV pretty well.

Are there any engravings on the mount of this lens? Like C or N? That would indicate which mount it was made for...

Yes I was very surprised by this lens. It's much nicer than I thought.

There are no marks at all except a red M engraved near the locking ear.

When I bought it, it was on a Kiev that did not focus the lens correctly.

It is very tight fit on my Nikon, I must push very gently but firmly the lens on the mount.

I'll post more shots, B/W or color, doesn't know yet. And I do not have a lens hood. It is a 54mm filter thread, just bought on evil bay a 54mm to Series VII adapter and an old series VII hood, not vented alas...

For the light fall off in the corners, I think I must try a less tolerant film than color negative. I think a slide would be great.

I just found this on flickr : A Zunow ad for the 5cm f/1.1 on a Contax.

As a camera repair, the only thing I did on this lens was to remove a slight haze just behind the aperture . I only removed the full front group to access this haze. I noticed that the rear optic group has its lenses mounted on screwed modules that does not have any shims. It is simply glued in place at a certain position, not fully screwed. I did not touch these settings, as there was no haze in them. I think with this settings it was possible to change the focal length and/or the optical registry to one camera to another at the factory. But perhaps I'm wrong.

It seems difficult to find any informations about Zunow.
The same seller had a Zunow 35mm f/1.7 in LTM but unfortunately I could not buy it in time.:bang:

I've handled about six 50/1.1 Zunows, 5 chrome and 1 black. None of them had any obvious indication of Contax or Nikon rangefinder mount.

Were Nikon mount 1.1 Zunows indeed produced? What identifies them as Nikon mount?

Back in the late 1940s and early 1950s just about every Japanese Camera manufacturer was making goods that fit other manufacturers, including the major players like Nippon Kogaku, Seiki Kogaku and Kōgaku Seiki-sha.
Teikoku Kōgaku was a minor player at the time trying to survive by being innovative in lens design and manufacture, it is very much possible that they did re-mount their 1.1 lens designed for movie mount to accommodate the newly introduced Nippon Kogaku mount and the old Contax mount. Lets not forget this particular lens was introduced in early 1950s, much earlier than any other Japenese optical firm's super speed offering.

Most members of this site mount old lenses to new digital cameras like the M8 and the RD-1 via assorted adapters, I wonder if the old timers tried the same thing?

It is a fact that the New York retailers of the time advertised many different brands, most times mixed together to offer lower priced options, so in essence, people did buy lenses from Zunow offered with Contax or Screw-mount Leicas(with adapters to fit M mount Leicas).
All this caused more demand and I'm sure Teikoku Kōgaku(Zunow) made more to accommodate the NY stores, hence the later black lenses.

The most interesting fact is that after half a century, wondering Photographers can get super nice results from these old antique optics and post them for all to see.

Looks like light fall-off is gone by f2.8!!! A task not achieved by lots of lenses today, including some primes.
