By film counterparts do you mean modern AF 35mm SLRs such as the Nikon F6/F5 or Canon EOS 1 or EOS 3 or do you mean manual focus SLRs like the Nikon F3/F2 FM/FE?

Yes, I should have qualified my comments to dslrs - I forgot we are living in a rapidly expanding digital world where there are now dslr alternatives 🙂

In seriousness, I would love to try the XP1, if it is getting that sort of endorsement, as admit I had become cynical with camera manufacturers efforts towards viewfinders

Good point perhaps, my frame of reference would have been manual cameras like my old FM2, are modern AF film slr finders so bad ?

I haven't seen $400, but if that is accurate that makes an APS-C about $30...that ratio would go a long way to explain the difference in price between say a D7100 and D600. 🙂

Its not that they're bad its just that they're designed to primarily be used with AF lens.

I love the DOF control with my D700, as well as the richness and texture of the files. However, I'm sure there must be a way to achieve that texture through APS-C...I just haven't found an APS-C camera that can yet. I might feel differently if I buy an x100s or D3200 this fall. It is interesting to note that it's not too hard to make files from my D3000 that look very much like those from my D700 under certain conditions (e.g., 1/60, ISO 800, f/2, 50mm on the D700 and 1/15, ISO 200, f/2, 35mm on the D3000).
