What's the diff? CV 50s

I am pretty knew to the photo game ...so humor me. What would make you want to use a 50/2 Heliar over a 50/1.5 Nokton. The only advantage would be lens size right? The Nokton is $200 bucks less and is a faster lens. Am I missing something???

PS. what does "color" refer to in the names of some lens?

The Heliar is a special edition, released together with the R3M camera.

It has a different optical formula than the Nokton, thus giving a different look to your pictures.

A faster lens is just that.. faster. It doesn't necessarily mean better..

The way I see it, the Nokton F1.5 and Skopar 2.5 are the Workhorse lenses, the rest such as the collapsible F2 and F3.5 Heliars are just "Jewelery" special editions - If I want an irritating collapsible lens ;-), I`ll get an FSU Industar 22 off E-Bay for £5 which is based on a Zeiss design and actually not a bad performer, even Genuine Leica collapsible Summars etc aren`t expensive and at least give a totally different kind of image due to lack of coatings etc , no need to buy a new one from CV.. Just my view of course

Like Peter said. I was undecided between selling my Nokton or my Summicron a litlle while ago. In the end it came down to the fact I almost never used the Nokton wide open and was just carrying around a bulkier lens. Anyway the 'cron reveals shadow detail like nothing else. If I wanted a good walkround, everyday kind of ltm 50 on a budget I'd be tempted to track down another 50 F2.5 Skopar. The Nokton is excellent if you really, really need f1.5.

yep, it is just about lens size

if you don't mind the size, the Nokton is an excellent optic

Very good point - ALL the Skopars are tack sharp wide open, the 35 pancake is amazing so and all are very compact, my only argument against the non-Pancake Skopars is the lack of a proper focus ring, those levers drive me nuts (it always seems to be in the wrong place for the distance range I`m trying to focus) ..

I`m really glad they make the bulky Noktons and Ultrons though, especially at the excellent prices they are, I was shooting interiors with the 28 Ultron and was struggling with the "slow" F1.9 ;-) as I couldn`t use a tripod. I can Guarantee that I`ll be wishing the 50 Nokton was F1.2 before long 😉
