Just had my first developed film returned and among the 36 about 5 displayed the following errors and some had a strange exposure across the frame (a seamless shifting exposure from left to right unlike these examples that has a sharp border).

Can this have to do with the horizontally travelling curtain that's not in sync with... well what (I'm just brainstorming ideas)?

Mind you, most of the 36 were great.

It looks like your shutter is capping (scroll about halfway down this page for more information). Do you know what shutter speeds you used for your 5 problem frames?

Looks like you're on to something. I guess one curtain sticks and the other one catches up.

I don't know which shutter speed I used exactly but from the top of my head I guess those are from the faster side of shutter speeds (1/500 or 1/1000).

And yeah, did I say DAMN!?

Sit around in your spare time and fire the camera a few hundred times, exercising it could clear it up (though it didn't work with my M3, I had to have it CLA'd)

I was thinking the same (right now I have a role of portra inside). Strange thing thought, it looks pristine inside, not a speck of dust even.

Guess I'll have to look into a CLA. Might be worth it.

If you need a CLA, try Youxin Ye. I just bought an M2 from him and he knows his stuff. His prices are not as high as your estimate, I understand and he's fast. I'd do it in a minute before screwing around with the insides. I'm no mechanic, I'm a photographer (in my mind).

But where (in the world) is he? I've also heard some scary stuff about him. Dosing the camera with oil leaving it worse than it was before. I'm thinking of sending it to the Netherlands (Will van Manen) from Sweden where I am.

Will van Manen is great. I've used the services of Youxin Ye as well, he resides in Canton, MA, U.S.A. I can PM you his address and e-mail address if you like.

Youxin Ye dousing cameras in oil? Got it all wrong, pal!

He'll do a good job if that's all the problem you want him to fix. For heavier, more difficult tasks, there's Don Goldberg (DAN). But for now, let's stick to Youxin. BTW, he's in Canton, MA, which is relatively close to Boston.

Take care! 🙂

There were a number of people who experienced the oil problem, I was one of them. The camera was still seeping oil after months, and it soaked the shutter curtains.

However, I let Youxin know and he explained that he had trouble with a an oil supply for a while and the oil would not stick to the parts as it should. I sent him the camera a couple of weeks ago and he cleaned it up, replaced the curtains and "rejuvenated" my RF patch.

He turned this work around in a week, and the camera seems to operating like new and no oil seeps. So at this point, I think he had some problems and is well passed them, I will use him again as needed!

This is great to hear, thanks for telling!

So the 'pal' didn't get it all wrong then 😛

Anyway, I placed my D200 with open shutter (a couple of seconds) in front of the opened up (no film, no lens, hatch open) M3 with shutter delay on the different shutter-speeds and a flash light directed through the M3 body/shutter towards the D200. Turns out that (as suspected) 1/500 and 1/1000 are bad (they work occasionally, but not all the time). The other's seems find, but it's hard to fully evaluate the exposure across the frame (light source wasn't that even).
I'll try to redo the test with a semi opaque white-screen which will distribute the light more evenly.

Btw, Will van Manen Kamera-Service replied and gave me price and deliverytime. I will consider it.

I would have thought it easier from where you are, to send to Will van Manen in Nederlands. He's done every M i've had, turn around is fast and he does a nice job.
