What's up at Fuji - PMA 2008

This is just..well..wierd. It is deffinitely contra-market. We'll just have to wait and see what it is. Or maybe the announcement will disappear from their web site never to be heard of again.

I recently bought a Mamiya 7II (6x7 format) and let me tell you that the difference in quality between images from that camera and any digital (or 35mm film camera) I own is obvious at a casual glance. Since I am an amateur, I have no one to please but myself when I use it, so I don't care so much about workflow issues. So, if it makes sense to introduce a new film camera, it needs to be easily diffrentiable from the digital cameras on the market. MF certainly is that.

That the best news I have heard for quite a while. What we need is an actualized G690 with interchangeable lens. With a nice viewfinder like the one on the Bessa R4, with frames for 50, 65 100 and 150mm lenses. And please, no electronic gadgets.

Cheers!

This is great news for film. It would be even better if Fuji decides to enter the film scanning business too and come out with a dedicated scanner much like the Nikon Coolscan 9000. Making an affordable film scanner will also help Fuji out as their revenue is still largely dependent on sale of film!

Although I am a Fan of Nikon... the monopoly makes the use of film kinda expensive.

Imagine the 10-year-old son of a PMA visitor, describing this new Fuji to his friends...

Kid: So I saw this hot new Fuji camera...so cool, but weird!

Friend 1: Yeah, so...how many megapixels?

Kid: Well, yeah, that's it...I don't really know...

Friend 2: Didn't they give you a spec sheet?

Kid: Uh...yeah. Got it right here.

Friend 1: Lemme look...yo!

Friend 2: What?

Friend 1: Word...it's got this weird stuff...

Kid: Yeah, that's what I mean...

Friend 1: Rollfilm...? WTF???

Kid: I know...the rep told me about it...the stuff has ultra-high res, he said...

Friend 2: How do I hook it up to my Dell?

Kid: He says you don't hook it up to anything, you just take a...roll of this stuff...

Friend 2: My Dad used to go on about this stuff...got baby pics of me he took...

Friend 1: Chillin' in your crib, huh?

Friend 2: Shut it...

Kid: ...so you load it up with this stuff...a little tricky, but it looked easy to me...

Friend 1: So how do you use it without a 'puter?

Kid: You load it, then take pictures like normal...

Friend 2: Hey, I don't see a screen on the back...

Kid: It doesn't use one.

Friend 1: Get outta here! How do I know what I got?

Kid: Rep says that's how people used to take pics. They didn't need to, um...

Friend 2: "Chimp?"

Friend 1: So how the hell do you look at your pics, then?

Kid: You shoot as many pics as you can on this...roll...then you take it out...

Friend 2
: Got a USB thing on it?

Kid: No...you drop it off somewhere...a lab, I think.

Friend 1: And...?

Kid: You get back a CD...that goes in a computer, natch...and you get a bunch of prints...

Friend 2
: Prints? Like, you can pass 'em around and stuff?

Friend 1: Yeah, you can stop breaking my camera phone when I hand it to you!

Friend 2: Your LG sucked! I could break it just looking at it!!

Kid: Yeah...this "rollfilm" stuff...sounds kinda cool. You think so?

Friend 2: Dunno...I want a new PSP...

Friend 1: AFTER you pay for breaking mine, dude!

So...any pics of this blasted thing yet?

No pics, but somebody at PMA has offered up a name: Fuji GF670. Described as having a bellows, so probably a 6x7 folder, like a larger version of the GS645?

Medium format? Good! A film camera? Better! A folder? Great! What, 6x7? Darn, they almost got it right! :bang:

Cheers!

For 6x7 you still get slide projectors. Not so for 6x9. So I am very happy with this. It all depends on the size of the camera. If it comes in a small package I might consider one as a companion for my P67II. I hope a folder can be significantly smaller than the Mamiya 7.

The PhotographyBlog imagaes of the Fuji booth are of 3 bleached blondes and some designer digicams.

The blogger probably walked by the GF670 and either didn't know what was or considered it to be useless. I doubt he spent much time at the Sinar booth.

RFF community calling RFF members presently in Las Vegas region:
Please grab a digicam, go immediately to Fuji booth at PMA, take detailed pictures of GF670 and upload here.
NOW!

I thought they were demonstrating how images are created from shades of red, green and blue...

Dazzled by the plastic cameras and bimbettes....

I understand your preference for 6x9...but seriously...this is still pretty darn good stuff here.
I wonder if I'll have to fly to Japan to get one?

Lord help us, it's a folding manual-focus rangefinder with knob film advance and automatic exposure.

They are really riding the retro wave are they?
