What's up with my Kiev? Red vertical band on pictures

At first I only saw this problem on one picture, but I just noticed that this red band is present on a number of shots on the same roll... I also thought it might have only been on shots taken with the J-11, but I also noticed it with the J-12... What do you think caused this? Processing, light leak, problem with the shutter...?

Here are two shots of the Avaya building taken about a minute apart with a J-12. (sorry for the crappy Walgreens scan!)

Any suggestions as to what's probably causing this would be greatly appreciated...

looks like a light leak, or maybe a shutter problem. I had the same thing (but much worse) on an old SLR. Never worked out the full cause.

Thanks Ash, I have also seen similar bands before... I hope someone has an answer!

By the way, I'm pretty happy with the roll even with this annoying problem rearing it's head... Just added two shots to my gallery I'm quite happy with! They're in my colour folder if anyone is interested.

I would guess at light leak as well. It might be worth looking for Jon Goodman's recent threads. If I remember correctly, it is a leak from the front as it is coluored.

Thanks for the link Kim! I really appreciate it... Looks like I might have to run some tests & see what's up... Unlike Way, my red bands are consistently in the same place when they are present. To me that would suggest a leak from one location through the back of the camera?

I too would suggest a light leak at one place along the back opening. Probably in your pairs of shots, it's the first one that has the leak streak, because it had longer to be exposed to leaking light. The next shot, moments later, had less opportunity for the light to have a strong effect.

Have you checked the negs? I guess these bands may be difficult to see, but if they run into the sprockets, the cause is from behind. If they're only inside the area of the film gate, they're caused from the front..

Given the red coloring, it's a leak from behind the film.

Check the back sealing, and check the places where shutter casting meets main casting, in the upper part close to film spools: I had a case when one to the left was leaking light in entierly similar manner.

yup those stripes (I love stripes ;o) are due to light leak. It's very common an issue on Kievs. Is it a 4-serie or an earlier one?
You've need to replace the yak hair by wool yarn...

What sequence where the photos in? If you case the Kiev the sequence will allow indentification of which side of the film run has the leak, cassette or takeup.

You have still got the Yac string in situ, sometimes it can fall out? Nice black four ply wool is a good sub as recommended earlier in postings

I've not seen as uniform a leak before, normally one gets leaks through the sproket shaft drive holes or immediately above the sproket, or from the view finder area but these leaks tend to be only at the bottom of photos.

I THINK the problem could be on the right hand side (from the back of the camera. That's what I remember being told about a light leak on my awful Seagull SLR.

The light-tight material on the side by the take-up spool may not be covering fully. If you have a never-ready case, whack it on the camera and see if the streaks disappear, or try holding your hand over the right hand side of the camera for half a film, and then holding it out of the way for the second half.

I was interested in your symptoms. I have not seen their like, although the area is a frequent sprocket hole leak region the uniformity is unique.

Have you managed to address this?

And further queries:

a) How did the leaks spill over into the perforation areas
b) In the Avaya building 'leak'

i) is the red area a uniform column
ii) are there hints of a ray or rays of red from the 'sky'

The symptoms may be clearer in the origional?

Did you change the roll in sunlight? Does the band extend outside the picture area?

Thanks for all the advice! I will take a closer look at the neg's & try covering up the back for the rest of the roll that's in there now... I'll also be interested in looking for the yak wool next time I open it up!
