What's with the PM box

Hey what's with the PM box today It's telling my 44 mess have the box full and you are allowed 20 only

I think Jorge made an annoncement yesterday that he was increasing the PM limit for the premium gallery thing BUT leaving the inbox max the same at 20 for others. I thought the max number was more. Maybe he he just forgot? JImG

So many good people here. So hard to leave.

Yes, I agree, but the number of things that irritate me about the forum are starting to make a longer list than what I like about it. When the cons list out weighs the pro list I will just quietly leave.

These measures are put in place to keep cost down. There are tons of messages in the peoples inbox. they have not been deleted. However, maybe some will trim their inbox now. Although disk space is inexpensive these days thats not the case when your system is hosted. Its simply called management of the site. Nobody get upset that is just the way things are. I know some of you keep saying your days are numbered, i'm done here, this is not what it use to be etc ... I'm sorry if people feel that way. However try some other good sites and let me know what you think.

I know FM

charges $60.00 per year just to be able to attach images to your posts. That service is free here.

they charge 72.00 per year to use their gallery. Its free here.

you get something like 15 or so mesages.

Robgalbraith had similar structure and look where that got him,

Photo.net allows you only so many images before you have to pay.

I can go on and on.

So, if one feels like leaving don't let me stop anyone. I would be sorry to see people go but if they are not happy here let them do what it takes.

I'm just a little frustrated at all the bickering to the MINOR CHANGES which have minimal if NO affect on a members status here on the forum.

If I revoked your rights to attach images to threads, upload to the gallery, use the classifieds or put an avatar of something offensive under your name then I could understand. But this is now getting out of hand.

As far as the avatar for premium members I will change it to something else that is not a Leica. Thats all I have to say about that!

People. Give it a rest and focus on photography. Share your experiences here or anywhere on the net. But for God's sake , its not the end of the world!

To those that have PM'd me I understand your thoughts and I appreciate the fact that you like RFF. Frank I read your PM.

This message is a general response to ALL and not any specific person.

I think there would be a lot less problems with a bit better communication... saying that the subscription is a "gallery-only" subscription, that it will not interfere with user's interaction with the forum, but will only provide additional benefits for the gallery etc... is bound to cause a lot of negative reactions.

that said, i still enjoy this site as much as before. there have been some annoyances lately, some caused by the administration (no matter how you look at it, deleting 50 messages you want to keep isn't fun) but most because of how members reacted to minor inconveniences, but none of these things will stop me from visiting this place.

i don't believe that the changes have interfered with member interaction at all.

it's the polls and near constant complaints that have distracted us from the larger topics that drew us to rff in the first place.

having a small star by my name has not impacted my photography at all, but yesterday, i fixed a lens i was not happy with and i did the same today to another lens and that will impact my shooting cause now i will use those 2 lenses more.

i don't always agree with what is said and done here, by jorge or by some members, but i stay here cause overall, in the end, where am i gonna go?
who else caters to our singleminded need to talk rf?

it's time we stop the gloom & doom navel gazing, stop making self fulfilling prophesies and just get on with it.
there will always be the 'good old days', great memories and good times but let's not sacrifice the future in the name of the past.

Jorge,

Thanks for coming in on this and I agree that the bickering has gotten out of hand. I, for one, appreciate the "enhancements" you've provided for those who have contributed to the site.

Your patience is admirable - if it were my site I probably would've pulled the plug a while ago!

No it's not fun. But you don't have to lose them; there is an option to download all you PMs as text, xml, or csv(whatever the heck that is) just have to keep them(oh, the horror) on your computer.

I cleared out 80MBytes of old attachments lately. I use a lot of fairly big attachments for the "classic" classifieds. I also delete those threads after all has gone well, the camera is received, and all are happy. I was really surprised to learn the attachments were not deleted when you delete the thread or an individual reply. You have to go into "manage attachments" on the control panel and delete then separately. I wonder how much space is taken up by "orphan attachments".

"Back in the day", on "real computers", we could set a file expiration date. After a file was on disk past a certain amount of time, it would archive to tape, or "vanish". Disks were physically big and did not have a lot of storage.

Other sites set "archive" and "no archive" status to threads. For Sales are "no archive". I would not be adverse to implementing expiration dates on classes of threads and attachments. If the software does not support it, I will be better about cleaning up after myself. One attachment makes the amount of space used by my messages look small.

Unusually, for me, I am a bit "obsessive" about clearing out e-mail inboxes - not just here - but generally. This is unusual because as my better half will attest, left to my own devices I would have been buried under old snail mail, newspaper, magazines etc. years ago.

I don't know why I am a "pack rat" with physical stuff but a "neat freak" electronically. I can only guess it goes back to the days of having an Apple //e with two 140kb one-side only floppy drives (and buying that "special hole punch" so you could use the rear-sides for extra storage!).

Anyway, I presently have 0 "unread" PMs and (OMG!) 9 "stored" ones. Time for me to clean out the in and outboxes! 😀

I'm slightly obsessive, like George, but the other-way-round. It's you peoples'wondrous ways with words - not only in threads, but also in PM exchanges: how could I ever just delete them?
Jan Normandale helped me out, suggesting the same option mentioned by Rob: now I save them - as text - to my PC. Relief and contentment.
That said, I really would prefer no special treatment. This broth needs lots of cooks, and who cares how high their hats are?

OT, or not?

OT, or not?

The introduction of a two-tier pay structure in our last
labor contract has created deep divisions in my union.

"Excelsior, you fathead!"
