What's your favorite C-41 Color Negative Film?

When I used to shoot color film (it's been a few years now), Fuji Reala was my most frequent choice -- great stuff! I also used a lot of Fuji Press 400, which I couldn't tell apart from Reala (still got a bunch of it in the freezer, I think). But my favorites were probably NPS 160 and NPC 400 - just beautiful.

First place: Ektar 100

1) Ferrania 400 because it has a gritty, almost black and white soul. It is no longer being made but still is available.
2) Kodak UltraMax 400, a little slicker than Ferrania 400; it does monochrome subjects very well.
3) Portra vc160 for pretty things.
4) Kodak Gold 200 for checking out cameras and lenses. It is inexpensive to buy and inexpensive to process.

Been itching to try Ektar too, it's the proce$$ing holding me back (120 and no scanner at present). Have to get the Jobo running.

Your poll would have been more interesting for specific films, not film makers. For instance, I selected Kodak, but I don't use Kodak Gold. I prefer Kodak Portra 160 VC & NC. I sometimes use Kodak Ektar 100. But, we seem to be filling in the details in our personal posts.

I really WANT to like Ektar 100 the best, but I can't get consistent color when scanning it.

What I CAN seem to work with is Fujicolor Pro 160S...I like it a lot.

I really like the Ektar but I want to try the Pro 160S in 120 format. I've used it in 135 and it was fantastic, but I let WalMart develop it because I was not set up to do it myself at the time.

I almost ordered some Portra to give it a try, but I went for the Fuji 160S in 220 format for the moment. When that's done, I'll try the Portra.

Having been a bit all over the place since the demise of Kodachrome (I have never shot a great deal of C41 before) I have finally settled on:

Portra NC - reportage, street, landscape, portraits
Ektar - reportage, street, landscape

Superb films. I will use Fuji 400H if I have it, or if I am all out and in a town where it doesn't have what I use above, then I will use Superia 200 or 400 - Kodak Gold is a nice film, but it's also very variable and I've had some Kodak Gold back that was horrid in its blotchy colour.

Oddly enough my most used C41 color negative film was monochrome - Ilford XP2.
