whats your favorite classic 35mm slr?

Hi Russ,
Thanks for the info and for keeping me in mind for the OM 1. I also have a Kiron or two, mainly for my Yashicas. Great lenses, sometimes think I should sell most of my lenses and buy only Kirons and Vivitar Series 1's.

Since you brought it up.

Regarding Viv S-1 glass. There are numerous (6) Series 1, 70-210 lenses. However, for the sake of discussion, we will deal with the first five. The 4th & 5th editions are nothing to seriously consider, so we will concentrate on the first three editions, which are the good one's. The 4th & 5th editions are also 2.8-4 variable aperture model's, but lacking in construction quality (Cosina built). Due to the fact that the third one is a variable aperture lens, (2.8-4) it will be somewhat sharper than a fixed aperture lenses. It is much easier to design and build a quality variable aperture lens.

The first edition was designed by Vivitar (Ellis Betensky, the top optics designer for NASA, had a hand in it) and built by Kiron. (67mm filter) It is a professional caliber lens, with a 1:2 macro feature built into it. It was the first zoom, designed with the aid of computers, that truly rivaled the OEM lenses of the time. That was in "76." It is a very high quality zoom, that will deliver professional quality results.

The second edition (my personal favorite) was built by Tokina, per, Vivitars specs. It too, is a fixed 3.5 aperture, but smaller, lighter and sharper. (62mm filter size). I really like it because of the fixed 3.5 aperture which is nice for focusing in dim light and long range flash work. However, not a true macro, 1:4 life size. However, it deliver's very good results!

The third edition was made by Komine, and like the first two, is very well built. It is a 2.8-4 variable aperture lens, and the sharpest of the bunch. It has 1:2.5 life size macro from 100-210mm's, with a working distance of about two feet. Which can be quite useful. Can you see a discernible difference in slides taken with either one of them? Probably not! Don't get caught up in bench tests. Any of the first three editions will give you professional-publishable images. I really like this lens, and in time may become my favorite.

Personally, I recommend the second or third edition of the line. I have and use all three of the first editions, and can highly recommend any one of them. Superb optics and construction.

Also, the Kiron 70-210 f/4, is an excellent performer that deliver's professional caliber results.

If you have anymore questions about the Vivitar or Kiron lenses, or want more detailed information on a particular lens, please don't hesitate to ask. I also have the the production code for the Vivitar lens line, which enables me to identify the manufacturer, and date of manufacture, for any of the Vivitar lenses. Are you aware of the Viv S-1 28-90 or the Kiron 28-85? As for Kiron glass, well that's another discussion.........

Hi Russ,
Thanks for the info on Vivitar Series 1. I have a couple of Tokina zooms, plenty of old Vivitar non-series 1, and two or three old Komine made lenses. Now prime lenses is another story, don't get me started, lol. My favourite Kiron is actually my 80-200 f/4.5. Possibly not their top lens, but feels great, silky smooth and I'm impressed with the results. I've never been a believer in bench tests either. I may ask an opinion or two from fellow users who are more in the know, but in the end I guess it actually comes down to using one and viewing the results myself.
I have a copy of a Vivitar production code list but mine lists only the manufacturers, not the dates of manufacture. Interesting reading. Series 1 28-90 you say....hmmm. I have all the 70-210 and 80-200 lenses I need for now(maybe???) but I'm still on the hunt for a couple of nice 28-80, 28-105 range zooms. Maybe I'll look into the Kiron 28-85 too. Now the problem is which camera line to buy them for? I have several Canon, Minolta, Yashica, plenty Pentax/Ricoh/Zenit/Praktica/Cosina (both K and M42 mount), Olympus, and Konica. Guess I'll need to narrow it to Pentax K, Olympus and Konica for now. You've given me some great ideas and plenty to think about, especially with Christmas coming up. Thanks and perhaps I can pick your brain again soon. I look forward to reading your posts and discussing this further some time. Thanks again, Curt.

Just found this 'old' thread, my user name gives a big hint to my favourite slr, the Pentax lx, mfor me this camera has everything I need, especially when it is coupled with a pancake 40/2.8. It also allows you to hang the camera vertically via the strap

Back in the day, I would have voted (and maybe did vote) for the Nikon F, But now that I've had some time with the FM, I'm ready to switch horses. I'm currently trying to hunt up a good user FM2n as a companion. Everything you need and nothing you don't!

Haha, a decade-old thread that gets revived, stuff like that only happens on RFF! Love it!

I gotta say, my favourite classic SLR would be the Nikon FA I'm about to purchase for a song...😎 Now to find the matching MB-15 power winder for petty cash 😀

Minolta SRT 201 - but only because it was my first serious camera borrowed from my dad. He has since given it to me, and I have been given an AE-1 from a friend as well - have never used it.

I can't make up my mind: Nikon F, Contax RX or Konica T3. The Konica was my first "real" camera and is a sentimental favorite, the Contax is the best handling and quietest and just a joy to use, and the Nikon is just special in some way; perhaps the most iconic SLR there is.

Very difficult for me to choose between these two...

I would also add the Minolta 9xi and the EOS 5 but i don't know if they qualify to be called "Classic" (yet).....

A Lazarus thread!!! I miss the good old days on RFF.

I might vote for the Olympus OM-1 as it is the camera with which I started photography. Sadly it was stolen out of a motel in New Orleans. Replaced with Olympus OM-2n and Om-2S which were stolen from my home in Phoenix. Notice a trend here?

Replaced the Bad Omen OM's with a Nikon FA, from there to Nikon F3HP's and F2.

Now I guess my "Classic" favorite slr would be Nikon F100.

I have picked up a black OM-1 which is locked up in a huge fire-proof safe inside a bank type vault with a bank vault door from a 130 year old bank that was being demolished. So far I still have it.

Like you have have a soft spot for the SRTs, the 101 being the first 'serious' camera I owned. It was stolen in 1974 so I'm pleased to have this 'selfie' -- of course I haven't changed a bit 🙄
