Whats your favourite jacket for photography?.

I have lots of jackets, but the one that I like the most for photography is the Scottevest Outback jacket.

I have the charcoal grey version and it is fantastic. Very warm, but not so warm that you can't wear it in cool weather. All Scottevest jackets have multitudes of zippered internal pockets. Many of them have an internal pocket large enough to fit magazines or an iPad!

The outside slash pockets of the Outback have elasticated loops sewn inside which can be used to hold drink bottles, umbrellas or the like. I use mine to hold a second or third compact camera or GXR module. The Outback was designed with concealed carry in mind, so it has zippered side vents that allow rapid access to belt-carried items.

I am looking forward to winter so I can wear it again. The pockets are so large I can put lunch inside them, or a rangefinder if I want. It is also designed to bulge very minimally when loaded with gear so you don't look like some guy in a fishing vest, or you've stolen a bunch of fruit.

@Mr. Toad. Glad I could be of help. The Alpha replicas are quite good, lot more expensive here in UK though, a surplus original is usually a lot cheaper. I see Alpha have also started to do M-43 and M-51 replicas too. My favourite is the M-51, prefer the peaked lapels. These vintage Belgian ones are really good too, they have expandable pockets with two sets of press studs and a nice waxed cotton finish:

Again these are popular street wear in London.

A no-name black leather jacket I bought 8 years ago, used, for the equivalent of $2. Real leather, no unnecessary buckles, studs or bling. Resistant to wind, rain, spilled beers and fashion.

Green MA-1 flight jacket from Alpha Industries... not exactly a photo jacket, but on the rare occasion that I need a jacket (mostly when I am travelling), that's what I bring.

I didn't realize there was a healthy market from collectors for vintage Patagonia jackets. A few years ago I sold one of their early pile jackets to Japan for $365 - many times what I paid for it in 1980. Then I sold a Shelled Synchilla from 1986 for $194 and a hard shell Cerro Torre from 1996 for $325. The coolest thing is that I actually wore these almost daily for many Winters and they had wear. Of course they were clean and nothing was torn up but still, it is quite ridiculous.

I just bought a $399 Mens Triolet, with large pockets, trim fit, great protection. I'm not a climber but it will be fine for skiing once we get a Winter again. And in 20 years it will probably be worth a grand. Better than stocks!

So buy high end, like Leica lenses, they actually appreciate while you use them.

Ouch, those m-65's are bad. Beats the unisex stuff the 60+ crowd seems to end up in around here though...

For me anything that looks good and has a pocket that fits my m6 and another for some film.

I only use my ordinary jackets for photography, but since I got the M3 and coll. 'cron, I look out for at least one big pocket.

We got a serious change in weather between seasons here in Sweden, so I have quite a collection of jackets for different weather. Everything from a light summer night jacket, to mid-spring leather jacket, to near-arctic winter jacket.
I still don't have anything for those heavy downpours we get quite often here on the west coast, but that's ok since I much rather stay in during those ;)

This is my typical photography outfit, to be worn with a Chrome Leica M9P. I have a different ensemble when sporting a black Leica:

I know that is a joke, but I like a regular sport coat. The inside breast pockets for my hand meter and the other for filters or any other add ons like close lenses for a Rollieflex. The outside beast pocket for a cable release, and the waist pockets for rolls of film. Exposed film on one side and unexposed film on the other.

Surely one has top blend in!

It's best to blend into whatever you are photographing. Here is an image of Erich Salomon who covered international conferences in the 1930s, shooting with an Ermanox:

The worst dressed news people at various functions are TV shooters. They always look like they are stopping off on their way to Afghanistan.
