The metric sizes for Americans is an instant headache. LOL.
Boy are we lazy. LOL.
Also I print 13x19.5 inch image size, but on 17x23.5 inch paper.
I don't know if inches gives an instant headache to the rest of the world.
Perhaps my odd size offends people because I use a custom paper size because I use a large format printer and rolls of paper.
Big borders nicely frame my images. Also galleries, collectors and framers love large borders. To me it is not wasted paper.

Hey Cal didn't know that A4 is a metric size? Thought that would be centimeters.LoL...
I did professional custom color and B&W printing for a very long time and never heard those term until digital like portrait and landscape.

Probably our arrogant American Standards give the rest of the world a headache too. LOL.

I don't know for the rest of the world but to me yes, great headache when we speak inch! LOL!
So the paper you print on should be more or less what in Europe we call A2 (16,5 x 23.4 in= 43x59 cm) and your print are about 33x49,5 cm.
Wow, this is big! And yes big borders are nice and elegant!

I find that broad two inch borders kinda make the image present itself and makes the print more like a sculpture.
My friends at A.I Friedman were very patient with explaining archival frameing and how a mat's job is to hold down a print, yet the print must "float" suspended by four corner hinges.
Dry mounting is to be avoided, unless the print size demands it.
In a way the big borders are like a frame to outline the image. If I compare a print on 13x19 paper without a border to one that is 13x19.5 image size on 17x23.5 paper the small/tiny increase in image size becomes massive. Although only slightly larger the perception is that the image size is mucho larger. The print also seems to catch the eye better because of the surrounding white background.

I usually print 12 x 18, of which the wide margin advocates would not approve. But once generously matted, life is good.
Photography, and printing in particular, is too damn expensive.

Yes I usually print 12 X 18 on 13 X 19 paper and I also cut fairly generous mats.

My daughter gave me a good mat cutter last Christmas. What a treat after using one of those palm cutters for years. And I've standardized on a simple black Ikea frame. So that cost is pretty low. Still....

That was really smart.
Earlier this year I had the honor of printing a friend's work for exhibition. I was very flattered. One of the things I advised is to consider the costs of framing and matting and to standardize to avoid custom framing.
I believe we printed your standard size to utilize a same sized standard frame.

Ikea frames are pretty decent and really cheap. They include mats, but I cut my own. The frames are international sizes, so not an ideal match for 2:3, but good enough for the cost-conscious.
We should have a thread on budget framing.

I have a really good friend that has a really nice mat cutter that he has set up in his old dark room that has been converted into his computer lab and I can use his mat cutter whenever I need it. In fact he helped me mat and frame my last exhibit. I usually buy frames from a place out east. Simple black metal are what i really like. It is expensive even if you do it yourself. My last show I was in it for almost a grand. Sold some work so it covered the costs and then some but it is expensive especially if nothing sells.

I have been looking at the pro matt cutters that do mitered 45 degree cuts that are scaled for large prints. The idea is to save money over the long run by doing everything myself.
I could see me one day, if I had the space, having the woodworking shop to make my own frames.

I buy my frames from AC Moore. They sell the Timeless brand of wood frames, and they are inexpensive, especially on sale, pretty, well made, and made in Watertown, NY.

24x30cm is most common, but I also use plenty of 18x24cm. At times I also print 5x7", but mainly contact prints from 4x5" or 9x12cm negatives.

Mostly 5x7 - it's perfect for street/snapshots. 8x10 for contact prints and 11x14 for 'big' prints; I'd like to try 16x20 some time, but that stuff's expensive/
