Whats your photographic pet peeves?

Overly complex techno-cameras with too many confusing options. Which means just about every digital camera ever made. (That's true even though I just bought a new digital camera and like its advantages -- I still dislike a lot of its UI aspects.)

1. The paranoia that you encounter when taking photos sometimes.

2. The cost and bad quality of lab processing (in my area).

3. The unwillingness by photo stores to process film in the first place (in my area).

4. The low availability of used camera gear (in my area).

5. Leica prices.

6. Prices of digital rangefinders (only really bad because of 2. and 3.)

7. The high energy consumption of (some) digital cameras.

8. Bulky DSLR sets.

9. That camera bags that hold everything I want to bring are always too heavy. ;)

10. That I often lack the time to take photos.

-Trifling over a question that was asked before. Who cares? If you don't want to answer, don't. There is nothing wrong with asking again. You might get some fresh responses.

-Spending all day scanning film only to discover that 90% is crap, 9% is complete Sh*t, and 1% is largely underwhelming.

-Looking forward to developing that roll of film with that awesome shot only to discover that it has been ruined by a technical flaw.

-"What kind of photos do you take? Like landscapes?"

Well, I don't know what to imagine. What I find objectionable is folks who talk about doing this (and how their oh-so-robust camera would survive) as though it were some sort of cool macho thing. This comes up in virtually ever thread about photographing in "dicey" areas.

Although I completely take your point, I defy anyone to pick up a Rollei TLR with pistol grip and pentaprism and NOT to compare it with a Maori war club rather than a camera (I have handled both).

And one of my friends (Tim Page) did actually stop a round (7.62mm, he thinks) with his Nikon F in Vietnam. It saved his life but the camera wasn't much use afterwards. Looks impressive, though.

Being generous, I'd say that 'camera as weapon' is merely shorthand for 'camera that is unlikely to stop working'. Being ungenerous, I'd say that there are distressingly many photographers with small willies and big cameras.

Cheers,

R.

- street shots with people walking but their feet are cut off...mine included...
- people who use 'cron' instead of summicron...sounds pretentious to me...trying too hard to be cool
- comparisons of film to real photography and digital to crap photography...i wish these people a long slow and painful ending
- pretension in general
- people with real talent...born with creativity...sooooo jealous i am!!
- people who ignore the threads on new leica gear breaking down and still insisting that leica is the standard bearer of quality...there are none so blind....
- rude assholes whose only purpose in life is try to make others feel 'less than'...i wish you all the same that i wished for digital vs. film freaks!

Street shots of people doing nothing much in front of big photographic street advertisements; or interacting with the aforementioned advertisements in a predictable configuration. These pictures appear frequently and are infrequently done well; very frequently, poorly.

If there is anything I've learned its that you should remain open minded in photography and that even cliches can work. My pet peeve would be those who try to attach too many rules to photography and want to tell you what you should and shouldn't be photographing (whether due to snobbery, lack of history, hip-ness factor, trends, styles, etc.). Unless your life depends on it... you should try to enjoy photography and not get upset by the little things. I need to take my own advice though too. ;)

That said, I do have a few terms that irk me...

Cron
Lux
Glass
Fast Glass
Nifty Fifty

I don't consider these anyone's issue other than my own though.

Something photo related that irritates me? Let me think...

- Forgetting to close the shutter on the 4x5 before I insert the film holder (and remove the darkslide!)
- Labs that mess up my negs
- The rising price of film in general
- Scanning negs

and a whole bunch of other things that are mostly about myself. I try not to get too irritated by what other people do photographically especially if they're not photographers. I did get a bit annoyed recently, though, when I was at a friend's wedding and the photographer used the on-camera pop-up flash for every single shot even for large group pictures of 70+ people and even in the evening in a candle-lit, mirrorred room from about 15m distance. That kind of irritated me because I know the shots will look crappy and so she's basically ripping off my friend.

Old guys with Leicas walking around looking for subjects with serious looks on their faces. ten extra pet peeve points if they have a ponytail or are wearing a beret.
