Whats your photographic pet peeves?

Outside taking pictures, the elitist who think the mainstream group of camera users nowadays is below them.
I mean, just shoot the picture for photographers and enjoy your hobby for the curators. No need to look down on others.

In context of taking pictures, peoples who's more interested in techniques and "checklists" (looking at certain elements such as pattern, repetition, ray of light, lens characters, etc.) instead of feeling interested to know about what happened in the scene.

Instruction books that don't lie flat when open (not confined to photography I suppose)

Refering to photography as art.

- Having a minilab in walking distance, but they only do regular C41, no B&W or slide :-(

- Having to wait five days for slide / B&W film development at another lab, when they do color in three.

- Online stores that only sell single rolls at three times the price. And even then, only have two or three in stock. I want pro packs at reasonable prices!

(There's another topic on this board where they're busy discussing "shooting people" at the moment. They mean of course taking pictures of people, photographing people... but that other not-so-nice sounding verb has taken over the world of photography, at least in English. It grates my pacifist and non-native-English-speaker ears.)

1. Camera magazines that are little more than stealth advertisements for the latest micro-modified, overpriced, price-skimming kit. You know the ones, most of the readers' galleries are filled with over-saturated HDR photos and "milky" sea shots and tests on how many lines per millimetre certain lenses can resolve and how many megapixels camera A has compared to it's rival, camera B. Aside from one or two that reserve a bit of space for informative journalism and, heaven help us, film, I've given up buying 90% of them.

2. Digital Evangelists who preach that "film is dead" when they have no f****ng clue what they are talking about.

3. Jessops and the loss of choice they have caused by taking over and then ruining other, independent, shops and other small chains - then refusing to take part exchanges, then employing 16 year olds who have no idea what film is and try to sell you the latest trendy pink box of tricks that has arrived on their stock list....

4. The loading mechanism on my Leica M6 (though I love the camera / results it gives me)

5. Lenses where the barrell rotates when you focus / zoom - thus making trying to use ND filters a right faff

In his NYT obituary, HCB is quoted as to his dislike of modern cameras : "It's like shooting pigeons with a machine gun".

Also, the eternal battles over film vs. digital, to filter or not to filter, or Leica vs. whatever. These battles are fought over and over again, for no good reason. Can't we all just get along?

My only other peeve is like this: I was asked to shoot an event. I volunteered to do so, no pay involved --doing it as a favor. Shot the pics, worked them up, sent them off--NOT ONE of the persons who asked me to shoot bothered to thank me for for my time and effort.

It seems to me that people often treat photographers as an afterthought. Either that, or it's a case of people valuing something according to what they paid for it--which in my case, was nothing. Next time, I'll ask for cash. See if that gets me any appreciation.

• Leica apologists/loyalists/fanboys/liars.
• digital-looking imagery.
• whining about size/weight of gear. Photographers used to have to drive wagon trains across the frontiers of America, lug 8x10 cameras and all the chemistry... to make photographs. Shut up about how many grams your rangefinder saves your back while doing tourist stuff for one day.
• HDR
• landscapes. 99% of the time, despite whatever craft went into making them, i'm just uninterested.
• current day street photography. I love the vintage stuff, where there's the impact of time and sociology and history. But, seeing a picture of random people doing banal stuff in New York (where i've lived for 20 years)? I don't need to see anything in a photograph that i would see incidentally when going to the grocery store.
• people who identify themselves by the brand of whatever they use. "I'm a Leica photographer." See point no. 1.
• Rangefinder snobs who whine about people using the digicam LCD for focus/composing, as if that's an indicator of amateur status. Legendary photogs have been composing on groundglasses of LF cameras, and Rolleiflexes and Hasselblads for a long time. It's the same experience. But, better.
• the term "chimping." It was cute for two minutes. After that, it's just stupid. Again, legendary photogs have been using Polaroid proofing to check composition and exposure - for a long time. Same experience. But, MUCH better.

In my obituary, i'm going to state my dislike for HCB: "wish you had paid better attention to focus and exposure."

When some people assume that I Photoshopped the crap out of a photo to get the colors/lighting that is shown in the image. I then have to explain that the reason the photos look the way they do is the fact that I got up well before sunrise to arrive at the location that I had scouted out the day before, set up my large format camera that uses FILM, and try to compose and create the shot that I had in my mind.

On second thought, maybe I should have just slept in, taken multiple shots onsite with my DSLR and Photoshop the crap out of the image file. What was I thinking???😉

In my obituary, i'm going to state my dislike for HCB: "wish you had paid better attention to focus and exposure."

He was shooting candid photographs (or at least that's the legend and wide belief). He didn't have the option to optimize exposure and focus.

People don't sit still and wait for you...

And using a digital camera with auto-everything is just cheating - that's another peeve.

EDIT: Not to say that people using digital cameras don't create stunning images - that's another peeve.

I don't care about Flickr much anymore (sadly) but when I was more active there,

1. Attention whxxxs posting comments "Great capture! See my photo stream!" with thumbnails of his photos.
2. Congrats on Explore! (oh and see my photos!) I really hated that.
3. Putting giant note box on my photos suggesting cropping. OK, please don't do that.

1 and 2 still happens today.

Difficulty of getting decent scans (and not having space for a darkroom).

People who shoot video of everything.

20+ mp cameras used by people who never make a print bigger than 8''x10'', or don't print at all.

Film discontinuations.
