Wheat vs Chaff

I enjoy reading the newsletters from john paul caponigro as well as freeman paterson
Much of what they write applies to film based as well as digital. John p shows many interesting links as well

I almost never go looking specifically for fresh good photography. But I find I am surrounded by it constantly in magazines, newspapers, advertisements, and news websites. While the ratio of great photos to the total has decreased, the total number of photos we see has increased.

You don't need a flashing neon arrow pointing to somefamousphotographer.com Simply read Rolling Stone, the tribute issues of Life magazine, your newspaper. Look at the news photos on CNN or BBC. You will find more great photography included in a Ken Burns documentary on PBS than searching the internet. It is all right there constantly in front of our noses. People only need to learn not to dismiss it because someone has not already flagged it as such.

Streamline the process of displaying here and I believe more, including me, would participate. I'm not a techie.

loeidelaphotographie is a subscription site, so may pass on that.

Not everything is for subscribers only. The Photo Daily News presentations of several different photographers, galleries, publishers, etc., is a freebie. Follow the link to get to that portion of the site.

Same here.

I also go to another forum for Fuji camera users (but they don't exclude other camera users). The process for posting photos there is drag and drop. Even a computer dummy like me can figure that one out.

One site I check everday is The Guardian/My Best Shot. There are several years of good content there with commentary by the photographers.

Thanks, done that!

I "consume" online photography almost exclusively through websites dedicated to photobooks.

  • I track individual publishers (such as Steidl, Mack, Morel, Super Labo, Xavier Barral etc) through their websites, mailing lists or instagram feeds.
  • Some ebay vendors I follow: photobooks68 , livresimages, argentic-photo, Bakunen, ferdyl2 .
  • I track #photobookjousting and #photobooks on Instagram

I come to RFF to see what Erik van Straten, Pan Giannakis and Larry Cloetta are up to.

<snip>>>

Just saw this. I appreciate it, but I’m not nearly worth it, as I am sure many will agree, though I am full of “opinions”, and perhaps other things. God bless you, but I can’t live up to that. Am sure this was an occasion for teeth grinding in some quarters. As far as what I am up to, my grade school teachers would have noted that, as often as not, I was “up to no good.”

Don’t think anyone has mentioned Shorpy yet. Not exactly what might have been intended for the thread, but it’s a photographic site that I find much more interesting than photography sites. More fun, anyway.
Easy to get lost in, if you have never been.

Casual Photophile for gear, Aperture.org for photos/writing about photos, Emulsive.org for film related news, a few instagram and tumblr accounts for keeping up with specific photographers. KaiW and Grainydays on youtube for filling in idle time, Mediadivision for cinema related things - they have some great lens reviews. Occasionally 35mmc, but unfortunately the quality and consistency of writing has taken a sharp nosedive over the last few years.

I still think photography is generally still best seen in museums and photobooks.

I am a techie and frankly it talks way too much effort to post. Scaling down is something that can be done at the server, shouldn't have to guess what size (I use an iPad).

So Dogman, what site do you get your daily Fuji fix at?

I know that a number of impromptu tutorials on how to post to RFF from Flickr have appeared, but it's time for the Head Bartender or one of the moderators to post a tutorial on posting pictures to RFF from a tablet or phone -Apple or Android. Cheers, OtL

I did above - https://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2993258&postcount=13

I agree Larry. A fun, nostalgic - at times, site.

I have determined, please correct me if I’m wrong, that the number of characters in a file name on an iPad or iPhone are too many for the amount of space set up with the rangefinder software.

I sometimes would send a file, via email, from my iPad where I would download the file using my iMac where I have Photoshop and Bridge installed. If I renamed the file with fewer characters, then I could up load here.

It’s too much fooling around to show a photo here.

RFF is the main photography site I visit in the internet.

Sometimes LUF and lomography site, it's nice to see something different, even if not always I like the images.
Less frequently The Online Photographer and the Kirk Tuck blog, now on pause.

Flickr but not much, anyway I found interesting photographers to follow.
Magnum photos is a good place to spend some time, in my opinion.

A few days ago I stumbled in this site, Emulsive which as preliminar view seems interesting.

Burn was a place I used to visit, but recently I have lost interest in it, not sure why.

For personal reason I'm not on FaceBook or Instagram which is a limit to the possibility to look for photos.

Generally speaking I prefer to look for the sites or blogs of photographers whose work I find interesting, as lamefrog said this can be done visiting sites od editors and looking for the sites of authors of the books, Steidl and Filigranes are a good starting point.

The photo size limits here seem like they're from the old days...maybe it's the forum software. 195 kB file size? 500PX wide? Somewhat thin, these days.

This is the Fuji forum I've been looking at(screen shot of header). Surprisingly good photos almost every time I visit.
