I had seen some of these photos in the past, but only now have read a bit more about it. Posed photographs that aims to "highlight the plight" of indigenous tribes "Before they pass away".

Critics have spoken out against true intentions, style of work and the actual portrayal of these communities. Limited edition books are being sold at $8,000 each (not differently from Salgado's 'Genesis') and prints for $58,000.

Interesting, conflicted story. Well-balanced article. Can't decide for myself if I trust the motives or I don't.

And (side note) thanks for reminding me of Aljazeera America. When I was reading news websites (I don't anymore), I found their write-ups to be well thought out with a good balance of viewpoints.

My review -- I went to the website: beforethey.com -- and it's like hey JIMMY NELSON JIMMY NELSON JIMMY NELSON -- and not so much about the subjects -- the shots are pretty, but so posed that the viewer is not left with much to think about -- I found the images to trivialize the subject matter. Salgado is a class act -- Nelson is no Salgado :) I do commend his energy. He's lucky he didn't end up in a huge cauldron as a main course!

I agree - very nice processing and interesting subjects, but does not leave much to the imagination. Mr. Salgado's work is in contrast far more inspiring.

Anyways, I don't think the subjects are trivialized, but certainly objectified - which isn't something I would mind. But I can understand if the subjects themselves are annoyed by the representation.
