When is Zeiss going Digital

Zeiss's own words were "when a full frame sensor is affordable to produce for a digital rangefinder system" basically.

So... who knows. Maybe a year? maybe two? who konws.

They already did, and got burned badly with the 24x36mm Contax N Digital.

Meanwhile, switch to medium format (e.g. Rolleiflex, Sinar, digital backs for the Contax 645, etc) with cameras designed for Zeiss lenses.

Yea, they blew it with the Contax N Digital. I have a N1 and it is a kick ass camera. But now that the Contax name is all but dead, I am hoping that Zeiss will bring both a full frame RF and SLR to the market around the same time. I use Canon DSLR's they are as good as it gets but I still think the Zeiss glass is better.

My current RF is Voigtlander Bessa R. I am seriously considering the ZI, and one of the reasons is the veiled comment that if they were to bring a digi RF to market it would be full frame. I will never understand why Leica brought a cropped sensor to market. Once that happened it all but guranteed which company was going to get my next purchase.

Cheers.

...best technology available at the moment considering the physical realities of rf cameras and wide angle lenses.

Leica did what they could and compromised where necessary.

But that is my point, they comprimised a main feature of RF cameras. You dont by a RF to attach a 200mm lens. For me, a RF is the ideal platform for wide work, so why bring a product to market that comprises that feature.
Just my $.02

They are attempting to ensure the financial viability of a brand that is otherwise dependent on what many people view as a dying technology. Film.
If financially sucessful, the M8 will pave the way to, and perhaps finance, the technology that you (and I) want.

CanDocGuy: From rumours I have heard, it was a case of financial survival for Leica. Without the M8, Leica may not have survived. I have no absolute knowledge of this, but if it is even close to the truth, just view the M8 as a step. As Ellie's father said in Contact, "Small moves..."

I know why they did it. I just dont agree. Remember the "New Coke"? Worst product release in history.

I am not trying to pick a fight.

I just think that if Zeiss feels there is sufficient market to release a film RF, I dont know why Leica was/is worried about their brand. The RD-1 came out, it was little rich, but it didnt take over the RF marketplace. A photographer I know at Reuters in Canada was using one, he loved it, but recently sold it. I think film is still healthy in this part of the photography market.

I was just surprised that a company as rich in history as Leica is, that they would go that route. You are probably right that they needed to pave the way for what I (we) hope will be a full sensor, but I just hope that Zeiss brings one out as well.

Zeiss? They are in the digital market - but not with the ZI. Zeiss designs and sometimes makes lenses but not cameras. Zeiss is probably making more money with Tessars for Nokia phones than with the whole ZI line-up.

As long as Cosina is not going into the digital market or Sony won't be convinced to increase market share by doing a digital RF, Leica will be the one and only RF system (assuming that Epson had had enough fun....) in the market for years.

Remember Orwell's 1984? "A full-frame sensor for 35mm RF..." seems to me like some "good-speak" meaning "Never".

Just my 2 cents
