My local lab is digital now, and they won't do B&W film..

Anyone have a decent mail order lab to send B&W 120 and 35mm film?

I am in the USA

Sure. I mail it to myself. 🙂 I do the best work of anyone I know, and it's far cheaper than sending it anywhere else.

i develop myself as well...only way to go i think...i have a steel tank and do 8 at a time....i also have smaller tanks for smaller runs or if i'm doing test rolls....

you should look into it...not very hard and you don't have to be dark for very long

If you don't want to process your own black and white film, you can use Kodak or Ilford's C-41 processed black and white film. A one-hour lab can process it for you. Otherwise, you can send your regular b&w film to me, for a two-week turnaround. I'll do it for $20/roll, not including shipping. 😉 Seriously, it's very, very easy to DIY, and WAY cheaper than "Ray's Photo Lab." 🙂

I can give another vote for just doing it yourself. There are tons of threads here that can help you with it and if you really have trouble there are tons of people who you can PM to ask things. You don't need to spend much more than about $40 to get started...and you'll be addicted to it once you start. 🙂

if you ever plan on printing BW yourself, i'd stick with traditional BW films and stay away from chromogenics...they're a pain to print....i printed some for a friend and it had a strong orange mask that cut the contrast and extended print times (we're talking a minute, wide open for an 11x14)

i believe they're optimized for color print machines, but not exactly the best for traditional methods...

How well does the Ilford print? It doesn't have an orange mask. For us non-printers (and hybrid-ers) all that matters, really, is how it well scans! 🙂

Even though I'm now back to souping my own conventional b/w film as of last year (notice a trend here?), I still use a fair amount of chromogenic b/w as well, and for me, Ilford XP2 is the way to go, especially if you wish to reserve the option to print from the negs conventionally, since XP2 doesn't have an orange mask to screw up things in the enlarger. It also scans beautifully.

I just scanned yesterday results obtained from having several brands of B&W film developed locally (using TMAX developer). I am unhappy iwht htese results. take a look at them. I may have to get back and learn again how to do and perfect B&W developing.

If you can develop it yourself, that's the best solution. Quick and easy, and you have full control, no darkroom needed, minimum of time.

If you can't do it yourself, for health or other reasons, try XP-2 or Kodak TCN400, both can be dropped off at any C-41 lab and picked up in the hour. good luck

I'll thirty-eighth everyone else's suggestion and say soup your own B&W. If that's not possible or you don't want to deal with the hassle, I'd go with Dwayne's Photo out of Kansas City. They did a great job on the 35mm B&W & 120 I sent them. They even do Kodachrome!!

I'm up to the suggestion of developing the rolls on your own, is so easy...
I use a changing bag to charge the tank if I can't darken around enough..

C-41 scan really well, and Ilford XP2 is easy enough to print, unlike Kodak...

But IMO you get the best signatures from conventional emulsion, each of the kind his own..

I have a Pro lab that will develop in whatever developer you want from what they have Kodak, Ilford. They charge $4 for processing and $5 for shipping. You can find them at www.deesphoto.com. They have a very good ;ab and darkroom. They even rent it by the hour. Anytime I am in Shreveport I drop in as they are the last of the old time photoshops. Been in the same location for 60 years.

They are very accomodating and will develop 120 as well as 35mm. I had some FP4+ in 120 and did not have a reel so I got them to develop for me and I told them to develop for smooth grain and Henry did an outstanding job. They also do Hi-Res scans and wonderful prints, both B&W and color
