Where are you-Nikon F and Leica R lens users?

Bill. It is not just the size of the camera itself. I have a Nikon Dxx as well, but cannot meter since I no longer have a nikon Dx00. With the G1, I still have use of the Nikon F MF as well as my Leica R MF lenses with aperture priority metering. I actually just tried the various Nikon and Leica SLR lenses onto the G1, unlike the earlier posters, these setups are really getting a bit too big for me. But it sure was nice to handle and focus those old MF lenses once again.

I'd like to think that I could live without metering as the LCD on the back will show me something along with a histogram. I've got a couple of new CV SL II lenses that I got to use on a DXX camera, they are both chipped so they will work with metering and flash. I'm sort of torn as I love the look of the old Nikkors they are fine old friends that have done very well by me. I still have one new member, the 28/2.8 AIs that I really like.

I think the size of the CV SL II 20mm on a DXX should be pretty livable. While the 58/1.4 is a bit bigger, but I grew up with an 85/1.8 so it's not a big deal when I want something tighter. While I love my 180/2.8 ED, I would not be too opposed to sell it for an AF version. I really love my 300/4.5 ED IF when I had her and the idea of a 270/2.8 is very appealing.

I have a few hand held meters and I might just bring one out with a DXX like I do with my S3-2000. I will get a few funny looks but I will have lots of fun.

I was going to write: "I can't wait to get an EP-1 so that I can take my Hassie 150, extension tubes, Russian hacked Hassie-to-Canon converter, and Canon-to-4/3 converter, stack 'em and take VR-sharp images of a yak's nose-hairs." But then that seemed snarky.

Actually, I had the same focusing issues with Canon DSLRs and Nikon glass as Henning has and am glad to hear that the micro 4/3 solutions for this work well. Henning, how to do you think that the EVF would work with moving subjects (e.g. children, animals etc.)?

I guess it just comes down to how fast your subject is moving relative to your dof and ability to focus, and I'm not going to try going after butterflies with the 200 micro. However, I have been taking some pictures of my grandkids with the CV 35/1.4 and M-21/1.4 and 50/1.4 with reasonable success. The shutter lag on the G1 makes it not the best camera for such use, but the MF capabilities are quite decent with a bit of practice. I have to say I'm actually surprised by how well the MF works on the G1.

Actually, I got a couple of adapters, and with other adapters I already had I've been trying almost everything on the G1. The macro stuff is just an obvious use, as are fast short lenses because Panasonic doesn't have any of those. Once the 20/1.7 comes out I'll get one of those and the fast lens thing will be largely history (I hope), but macro will still be up to lenses like the Nikkors and my Leica Photars. At the long end, the 400/6.8 Telyt, which while long is fairly light and quite good in the center, also works well.

I tried Nikkor lenses on the G1 and that setup works quite well.
But immediately looses the size/weight advantage.
I tried CV lenses as well and that setup works also quite well.
But when using fast lenses, it again not so small/light.
But the main problem is that the kit lens is just fine. The weakness of it is speed - to me at least.
So I ended up with Pen lenses to accompany the original kit.
I still hesitate between the 38/1.8 and 40/1.4. Both of them are excellent.
For longer FLs there is the 100/3.5 and the 150/4 - and still a small bag is enough and the weight also acceptable.
I'm still waiting for the promised 20/1.7 as at the wide end the speed still missing.

I have adapters for both Leica M and Nikon F lenses for my E-P1. The only F-mount lenses that make sense (for me) to use are the 135/2.8 which is fairly small, a 35 T/S, and various homemade lenses that are F-mount. I thought I might use some of the longer tele-zooms, but even the fairly compact 70-300 seems huge on the E-P1. For most of my adapted lens needs, the M-mount lenses work better.

PS, I actually tried Pentax 67 -> Nikon F -> Leica M -> micro 4/3, just because I could.... but there was really no point in that.

I enjoy using legacy lenses on the little G1. You do lose the size advantage, but manual focus works very well, and the results can be very good. This with G1 and Nikon 28/2 AIS:

A lot of fun, and the lens character does come through.
