Does anyone know of the best deals for this camera or even better, if there's one going second hand? I can see one on ebay but the price seems steep at £1000.

Paul,
Just under £1,000 seems to be the U.K. secondhand dealer price for one at the moment. My friend brought a mint one from Aperture in London for £900 a couple of months back and they sold another a couple of weeks ago for £950. Fffordes also had one for about this price a few weeks back, but I can't see it on thier site today.

Jacobs in New Oxford Street had one a couple of weeks ago as well I didn't see a price, but it didn't look mint. May be worth giving them a ring.

Thanks Jim, I managed to bag an R-D1S for £850 from London Camera Exchange which also included a Mem card and extra battery so I'm quite happy!

There also seems to be one on ebay at the mo for about £700 from Singapore for anyone else who fancies a dabble :)

Paul

They're pretty rare on ebay that's for sure, though I have seen them go for between £750-£850
Keep an eye on international sellers - remember the pound is pretty strong at the moment.

The R-D1 is a camera I really fancy but can't afford it without selling some of my other gear, and since I've never even seen an R-D1 in the flesh I think I'd be pretty rash to do that.

I notice you're in Greater Manchester Are there any more RFFers in the area? I'd love to meet up and have a natter sometime. Especially if there's an R-D1 for me to drool over! ;)

Yes, that would fine! My mate (whom I hate with a passion) owns the M8 with just about every Leica lens ever made (including the f1 Noctilux) and then I currently shoot with the R3a but will be joining the digital club with the R -D1 from tomorrow.

I will post some pics and we can both mug my mate for his gear at some point too :)

I bought the second one from Aperture, very happy with it.
The RD1S does sound like a good deal!
I lusted after one after I missed a bid on ebay on 31 Dec 06, it went for £566!!
There was one on ebay recently that started at £750 but didn't go...

I'm just outside of Rochdale, but central Manchester if fine for me to get to, plus a good venue for some street shots.

Let me know when's convenient. I'll bring some gaffer tape and a sack for your mate.
Bagsy first go on his M8! ;)

We've done a few photoshoots in Manchester so that sounds like a great idea. I'll keep you posted and we'll get something sorted.

Ace!

When we've got a date and time sorted, how about posting it up on an appropriate forum to see if there are any others interested?

Bob.

Well I had chance to take out the R 1Ds this evening and use my 15mm Super Helios. Yes the vignetting certainly needs to be cancelled out with the software but I still love this lens, just like I did when it was on the Bessa.

Heres a shot from the 15mm

And heres one from the 50mm f1.5, I shot this wide open

This camera seriously tempts me to sell the Canon gear and save for the M8!

Looking good!

Where was the field shot taken?

I keep wondering wheather to go the R D1 route. It would mean selling a lot of my existing gear, but then again I can't use all my cameras all the time can I?
Given that I'm also considering setting up a small darkroom at home I need to decide which way to go.
I find the cost of film a pain. As is waiting for the colour stuff to be developed.
The idea of a one off cost and very little running costs after that is very appealing.

As a new owner what are your feelings?

These things are getting to be hard to come by! The only one I can find currently in the US is at KEH for $2,469 (£1,239 as of today). I managed to pick up the R-D1 from Singapore for $1,600 (£803). EMS tracking shows the box in transit - I should receive it early next week. It remains to be seen whether I got a good deal. I will post some sort of follow-up after I have shot a few frames. Wish me luck!

I am absolutely delighted with it! I too will prob save for the M8 but in the meantime, this is a great camera and the quality of the pictures leaves me speechless...

I am exporting RAW pics from the included Espon software at 13.5 megapixels. Now I was very sceptical about any kind of interpolation, especially from a 6mp sensor but, I'll let you decide...

There is one on the German bay. R-D1 with updated firmware.
