where do the rules come from?

Some people don't have any real problems. So they look for problems and find that the biggest problem they have is not knowing where the photo bag rules come from.

Easy there...!
This is a photography forum, not a world economy-socio-politics one.

Musings about bags are perfectly within the scope.

And we're nice to Joe because he's the head mod ... he has the power to delete, censor and ban.

I love bags! :D

:DBeside camera gas I have 5 kayaks and about 7 paddles, 4 tents ranging in size and I think about 6camping stoves. Not to forget masses of drybags, backpacks etc etc.......

On the other hand I make do with 2 pairs of trousers and only have 2 camera bags .

and I keep asking myself where all my money goes.:D

I don't own any camera bags at all, I just use my man-bag. That will likely change now I've ordered a 4x5 camera, so that plus film holders etc. will need a more substantial bag to carry it around in.

Joe, when you realize you have too many bags, you have too many bags. Bags come and go as equipment comes and goes. When I switched back to Leica from a DSLR, my Tamrac 614 HUGE bag didn't make sense any more. I've got a couple of backpack bags I used twenty years ago for MF gear that don't make sense for me any more. As my gear has downsized, so to has my need for bags. I'm trying to get down to just three or four... but oh MY bags are hard to sell. And used bags are pretty cheap to buy.

The bottom line is that those kind of "rules" are only an issue when you make them an issue.

very hard to sell! shipping is pricey and people want them for very cheap...plus, i keep buying them again!!

Sorry, never meant to mix socio-ecopolitics into it. Don't know how to take this question serious either to be honest.

i think i have a rule that things should be simple...and multiple bags...cameras...watches etc. is not simple.

Not strictly true. I take your point about multiple kits potentially being complex - if their uses overlap. However, like many others, I have a number of kits of different formats that suit different subjects / locations.

Having insufficient bags for a significant amount of kit can make things very complicated and lead to forgetting things that you would have pre-packed if you had a bag dedicated for each kit.

For example, I have my Hassy 500c/m, 3 lenses, Bay 60 filters, spare backs, metering head and all the other Hasselblad paraphernalia in one Lowpro backpack. Similarly, I have my mamiya 7, 43, 65 and 150mm lenses, appropriately sized red, orange and yellow filters, lens hoods tripod mounting thingy that allows me to change film without having to demount the camera from the tripod packed into a Lowepro Slingshot 300. I have a number of other bags / systems packed and ready to go.

If I had to keep all my kit "loose" and sort through it for what I need every time I want to use it, I GUARANTEE that, sooner or later, I would forget something really important which would set of a chain of events starting with me being pissed off and end up with my wife being pissed off with me.

I even have a spare bag (Lowepro Messenger Slingshot) for those "grab and go" moments when you just want to carry a single body / lens combo or a point and shoot.

Ergo (at least in my book) more bags = orderly life = less frustration = better end result = happy marriage.
