Where do you buy your film (tri-x) ?

I'll have to drop by Downtown Camera next week when I have jury duty. Their website is near useless since there's no film info. I'll have to checkout the "used gear". If their AGFA prices are as good as Photo-co's, I'll be happy.

Agreed, Kin, their website is useless. But the store itself is quite good. I bought some APX100 there a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty reasonable (natch I can't recall the exact price). Ask if any films are on special -- sometimes they feature things like Fuji Acros at very good prices. A lot of students from George Brown College and Ryerson University buy their supplies there. They give 10% off if you buy 10 rolls of the same film. Their darkroom supplies are also discounted -- but sometimes you have to ask or the cashier won't know it.

This thread has got me thinking about bulk loading again. Haven't done that for a few decades, but I'm shooting a lot of Tri-X now and it might be time to roll my own again.

If you want the "nice" online version of photoco, it's www.photo-co.com. It's the same company, same tel# etc and the 100ft rolls are listed here. Their AGFA prices are very good, but Ilford prices aren't any better than Henry's here in the GTA.

Yep, I did know about their "other" site (I've always wondered about that...), but both sites used to have the same inventory, so I just went to the one that was easier to find through Google 😉

I don't know if Henry's is cheaper in Toronto or something, but every Henry's location I've visited has charged the same price as listed on their site, and Photoco is quite a bit cheaper on most Ilford film. For instance (including tax):

HP5 Plus 135-36 Henry's: $6.31 Photoco: $5.03
Pan F Plus 135-36 Henry's: $8.04 Photoco: $7.08
Delta 3200 135-36 Henry's: $10.34 Photoco: $8.15

I've used a student card at Henry's in the past, but even then it's often cheaper to order from Photoco. I doubt most members here are students, anyway. Kodak film is also cheaper, but as you said, the really cheap stuff is the Agfa film. I quite like APX 100, and I use it in both 35mm and 120. APX 400 is also a great choice for experimenting with a Holga.

This is not really an online shop, but only shows the phone and fax numbers. But the shop is great, and the prices are the lowest I have ever seen.

I recently discovered unicircuits, which was great, because I'd been admiring the 100' rolls of Neopan 1600 on Yodobashi's site with no way to order. They also stock some weird products like Fuji Natura (which is unfortunately rather expensive).

WOW! Unicircuits have 4x5 Fuji Neopan Ortho film... never seen that before and the local supply of orthochromatic film has dried up.

Does anybody in Oz sell Gigabit films?

Hmm.. the Henry's price must have gone up, because I know I didn't pay that much, and I've gotten all of those in the past year or so. But I do know that you can get better pricing on 3 rolls or more when you walk in.

Got to Downtown Camera yesterday, only $34- for a 100ft roll of APX100, just a few $ more than Photo-Co, but no shipping costs.

What did disappoint me, was the attitude of the guys behind the camera counter. Saw the Kiev in my hand, and pretty well just gave me the brush-off. Won't get getting my 350D there!

That's $4 more than Photoco even after shipping. Obviously it's not worth waiting a few days to save a few dollars, but it is if you order several items. Anyway, why do they deserve your business if they look down on you?

I had bought the film _before_ going over to the back used counter. I'll be seriously considering Photo-Co next time. Besides, I'm not a big fan of going downtown, so getting stuff shipped to me is just fine. I do want to give local businesses a fair shake first.

Thier loss, I'd say. I was at my FNCS (friendly neighborhood camera store)today and the older pro photographer there was very interested in my Kiev 5 (and has appreciated my 4a previously as well.) though he was actually more fascinated by my SC mount Skopar. Still he picked up the 5 and was quite surprised by the finder.

Needless to say, when I can afford to, I support that shop.

I find that surprising. I've always found the guys behind the camera counter at Downtown to be friendly and helpful. I bought a 300D from them.

Just an observation, but many Chinese people can be very condescending to other Chinese (like me) especially if they don't think you're going to spend money. I was wearing a backpack, so I look like a student. OTOH, I try my best _not_ to walk into a store when buying a major item while wearing a suit.

Never knew that. I guess these things are universal. You're right -- I'd not wear a suit into a camera store either if I were buying 😀
