Where do you come from...?

No...not geographically but 'on-line'-wise.

Pre-RFF (also known as the dark ages of RF fandom) where did you hang out?

Me I frequented a number of photocritique sites (in retrospect very few of them left comments or suggestions that were direcly 'useful' - BUT the main benefit with these critique sites - once again in retrospect - was that they provided me with confidence. That and to see 'what other people were doing'. The next time I'll "just" leave a "Nice!" comments I will remember that even those short little comments can be valuable to the person who took and posted it...).

But I digress.. I'd say I hung out at the following five sites more than anything pre-RFF:

I shoot a lot of different cameras, from Minox to Medium Format. Of all the sites I've seen, I'm only impressed by www.usefilm.com. I find this site exceptionally refreshing because rangefinder cameras have given the greatest pleasure and have been the best of company throughout my travels.

photo.net ... Although it gets overpopulated , there still are some good threads, some conversations with great folks and some lovely images popping up (more or less accidentally).

I cruise here and photo.net mostly now-a-days. I check in at popphoto.com. I like to look at the galleries over at pbase, and I spend some time looking over at phototalk.net, there are some really good photographers who post images over there too.

I used to frequent Yahoo groups, MSN groups, BestStuff.com, photo.net, The Classic Camera Repair Forum (Kar Yan Mak) and now Smart Groups.com. Before RFF that is. Anywhere where the people are reasonably ok and not overly concerned with snob appeal. Leica, Nikon and Contax are fine, but I also like Argus, Kodak, Japanese and Russian equipment. Anything and everything can be used to make a good image, given the proper lighting, focus and of course creativity. Just my two cents worth.

I bought a Leica system over the last year and although I'm all set with 4 lenses I still follow the forums. I find the fanatics hard to take but I stay polite. Interested in special effects and composition too.

I was using the newsgroups. But those degenerated into personal attacks, porno spam and hijacked identities.

Then it was on to photo.net. Occasionally, the Zeiss-Ikon Collectors Group on Yahoo! and more recently the APUG forums.

I come directly here... and then amble down to photo.net to check the weather. I used to login a lot in the popphoto.com forums and used to post stuff in phototalk.net but now... it's the RFF mostly (almost ONLY).

And, of course, mais oui!!!, our beloved eBay!!

I used to post my photos on experiencephotography.com, a small site not very active.

Then there is Photozone.de which I still visit from time to time but the community is more towards gear heads (my apology if you are one of the community member of PZ) with very few photos to back up their arguments so I've lost my interest in that site.

I found Photo.net long ago, I think late 2001 but didn't decide to join till I got my flatbed scanner earlier this year.

Then I found RFF when Googling for community for Bessa user. A well balanced site with lots of gear talks and photos to show that the cameras are put into use.

I am new today to this list and like it a lot! I was referred here from a member of the Nikon MF list -- that and the Rollei list are my main haunts, and then Photo.net and usefilm.com.

I shoot mostly with old Contax (I, II, and IIa), Rollei SL66, various Alpas (one qualifies for this list: it has a rangefinder along with being SLR), and a Zeiss Super-Ikonta. Pretty much in that order, now that I think about it. This seems like a great list, glad to have hed it recommended!
