Where is DAG?

I'm sick of waiting for my lens. He's had it since the start on January and has had appalling communication. Two months ago he emailed me, after four curt emails from me, to say it would take a week to complete the job. Since then he's ignored my emails and not followed through on his word. If you're that bad with emails, you shouldn't have an email address. Also, considering he initially quoted a three week turn around, I think he also needs a calender.

DAG needs help. He appears to be overwhelmed.

To follow up on my previous post, he didn't answer the last few emails, after promising to deliver by Wed. the 4th. I called him on the 5th, and it was like he had completely forgotten his promise.

I suggest if you choose to send stuff to DAG:

(a) Don't attempt to communicate via email
(b) Give him specific deadlines, and have him make a commitment to that deadline (or not.)
(c) Be prepared for him to miss the deadline.

It's been like this with Don for over a year and a half. I sent a camera and lens to him for a cla and it took months. After one phone call he told me it was on his desk and ready to be worked on. I called back to weeks later and it was in the same spot.

Finally after numerous emails and 4 phone calls I gave up and Sent the gear to Sherry and had both back in two weeks.

Whit Sherry it is best to call ahead in the afternoon or evening. By the way, she's a great person to talk to.

Don is BUSY and some how just keeps getting busier. There are few people that will perform the white magic that Don does. Sherry does her own stuff, but I think she does not like to do the pimping that Don will. If you want it done right, send it to Don. If you need it fast keep in mind when you go else where you might not get it done right. And the odds are you will pay much more in the end.

Perhaps Don needs to charge extra to people who need it fast. He takes 60% of the extra for himself and give 30% to the folks who's stuff he has to sit down to lower their costs.

I've priced Don vs Leica on basic stuff and I would go to Don every time.

Yes, the problem with Don, is that human cloning is not quite there yet. 🙂

The project he's working on for me, I would not send anywhere else. He does good work, no doubt.

There are still technicians in big cities around the world who can handle Leica CLAs, and people like John Van Stelten and Ken Ruth who are highly accomplished. Maybe people should seek them out and find a slightly shorter queue.

Don is fine. I just sent a lens to him today. I realize it will take time for him to get to it, but he never takes shortcuts, and his prices are fair.

Don undercharges.

The work he did on my M3 DS was impeccable, I felt cheap when I paid the bill.

I honestly think he needs to raise his prices by 30% and get some organizational help. And maybe he could train someone to do some of the other work, like a young intern closing for a surgeon.

Don Goldberg and Sherry Krauter's work are fantastic and is worth the wait IMHO. Heaven help us if and when Don or Sherry decide it's time to retire. I hear lots of people saying "Why don't you send your stuff to some one else? They must be cheaper/faster."

Unfortunately very few people can do the work as well as these two technicians and we will be in a world of hurt when they go. God Bless them both!!

DAG's does make mistakes. A M3 I had him do a CLA on locked up tighter than a drum after only 10 shots. After he fixed it, I took it out of the box, tried out all of the controls, and promptly pulled the rewind knob off which he failed to properly tighten. The next time one of my cameras needs a CLA it goes to somebody else.

I agree with those who said that we may be relying too much on Don. Sure, he does first-class work; but so does Sherry. I sent her my 50/1.5 Summarit for an internal cleaning 3 weeks ago, and she has already sent it back clean and sparkling like new.

So unless Sherry doesn't want to do some particular job, Why not check with her first? And for Barnacks, I will recommend John Maddox at L&J Camera Repair in South Carolina. John did first-class work on my two IIIcs.

If anyone is interested, DAG received my CL earlier today, and 10 hours later, it's done! Great communication at every step of the way.

Absolutely recommended!

I wonder if Dag works first on those cameras that he prefers to work on. Justin gets a CL done almost immediately and it took three months and two emails for my RD-1 which he was very reluctant to work on. He only took it because I asked him to CLA a Nikon 50 1.4 at the same time.

And yes, he really does undervalue his labor.
