this is one of my favorite things to play with compositionally, yet one of the simplest. if a diagonal goes off the left or right edge, it creates a sideways motion, and the areas above and below have a heavier, quadrilateral shape. on the other hand, if a diagonal goes off the top or bottom edge, it creates an up or downwards motion, and makes sharper, lighter triangles. it can really change the feel of a picture.

I don't feel as though there are any concrete, repeatable effects to this outside of context, but I definitely like to play around with it!
