there is a development chart by Ruediger Hartung in the 510 Pyro Group on Flickr. He has posted some beautiful photographs all developed in 510 Pyro, his results show that 510 can be made to work with many different films. ASA 100-200 films work best, 400 asa T grain films such as Tmax and Delta also yield good results. There is an improved formula given in the 510 Pyro Group disscusion page. I have mixed a batch of this but as yet I have not had the chance to experiment with it.

Exactly my experience also. I have previously mixed various Pyrocats in water and in glycol very successfully. The elegance of the 510-Pyro formula appealed to me, but it produced extremely low shadow density compared to any other developer I have ever used.

Ruediger's photos very clearly display the low shadow contrast I didn't like. Many of his photos are beautiful, but the look is not what I am aiming for. I have some density curves but have never seen any from the proponents of 510 pyro. I'll get renewed interest if someone can show me some curves with decent toe speed.

What about PMK+? I add amidol for that extra "+". One of my favorite developers.

Photographer's Formulary will sell you whatever chemicals you want for the most part. You just need the measuring equipment to mix it.

I however will mirror the other comments. My experience with 510 Pyro was not great. Even after carefully mixing it I never got results anywhere close to acceptable.

A PMK Pyro kit might be easier, with more reliable results. Also available from Photographer's Formulary.
