Hi,

A friend of mind who is teaching photography asked me to look for a brand new (in plastic bag) Leica M6 or M6ttl. At first it sounds rather silly to me but the camera will be used as a display item rather than a practical tool.

I found 2-3 on Ebay but they go for over 3000 USD. I wonder do you experts know where to find one?
Thanks

That's a lot to pay for a display item. I've got a very excellent condition M3 that is listed in the classifieds going for $1,100. USD if you're interested.

Why can''t said friend of mind (sic) not look him/herself for a $3000 display model?

Where does your friend live? Willing to pay import duties from overseas? Why an absolutely new camera?

Fantasy situations require fantastic questions. Good luck and do let us know some of the reasons for this quest. Thanks.

He lives in the UK and is a collector himself. For specific reasons, I rather not disclose but purely to do with his family satisfaction. Recently he got a Leica M4-P new in original plastic bag for £800 and keen on buying more (new-as he said).

IMHO, Leica is largely a fantasy company so do expect some fantasy buyers :)
Cheers

P/s: thank you all for the offerings, I'll speak to him.

Why not give him all those collectors cheap mockups and use the cameras for what they are made for?

Is there a market niche for mockup manufacturers? Wouldn't it be wonderful for all those collectors to have a perfect, single-stroke, black Leica M3 in the vitrine, together with their personal prototype of the first M5, their personal moon rock, collected by Armstrong, and, of course, a boxed Rolex Comex Non Date Submariner With Gas Escape Valve?

What a wonderful world this could be... I need to call some chinese companies today, they are great when it comes to manufacturing bogus merchandise...

I bought a brand new M6 ttl .58 in January last year from SHPHOTO in Germany for about Euro 1530-40. Despite the bad press they use to get here I had no problems. Ironically at the same time they had a second hand M6.58 listed that was over Eu 1700's. I didn't ask any questions and bought mine quickly.

No worries, recently he sold his father's brand new Leica M3 for just above £5000.;) And the buyer still consider it was a great bargain...I don't know why, don't ask me either.

In fact, many people still making 1000+ profit on trading Alpa, Rollei or Hasselblad so please do let me know if you encounter a brand new M6 for sale.
Cheers

Hear hear.

It's like caging wild animals. Let them free, let them be used for what St Oskar intended.

If you find an M6 classic that is still unused (truly, as opposed to sales-speak), it'll probably need a CLA. Your best bet is a gently but consistently used camera.

Probably won't matter because it doesn't appear it will be used...

How need for CLA appear? Is it really a more common need for a collector's items than used ones? I suppose lubricant change properties with the time, but compared to consistent used ones is there significant different for need a service?

Is there something important to know before trying long time not used M body?

I got to know, that the M6 I am waiting, is used by owner with a couple of rolls and it worked fine. But he was bought it from a collector, who has 'senseless' amount of cameras. It is an early M6 with Leitz red logo.

Viewfinder mask tends to gum up, so it doesn't change when you change lenses.

Slow speeds can get sticky; 1/1000 can drop to 1/500 (if it's 1/800 that's good).

The masks and slow speeds often recover with use. Top speeds usually don't.

CLAs are wildly overrated. I've had about 5 repairs done to Leicas in almost 40 years, and no CLAs unless the camera needed a repair.

Cheers,

R.

CLAs are wildly overrated.

That's a bit sweeping isn't it? I agree that a default to have everything CLA'd frequently is quite unnecessary but they can be useful.

I bought an M3 in poor condition, used it for a bit, recognised it didn't seem quite right so sent it to Leica Milton Keynes for a service - it came back transformed into a beautifully smooth camera, much more satisfying to use. Same went for an M2 much improved by Malcolm Taylor. However, I've not had my IIIa done as that seems to be working fine.

Roger, I'm interested in why you see them so overrated.

Many thanks

What do you mean, "Don't ask you?" He supposedly sells am M3 for over 5000GBP and you don't ask how that's possible? And we're not supposed to ask?

If he's so good at selling that Leica M3, why can't he find his own M6?

Does that mean you're offering us 1000+ as finder's fee to find you this new M6?

Something's fishy in this thread...

Thanks. I suppose I can try and think again then. In other hand I understand feeling of smoothness and cold weather influence to mechanic and lubricating.
