Hi I recently bought serenar 50mm f1.8 from one of my local shops, and I wanted to get lense hood for it since it had some scratches on the front element.
But the canon internet catalogue stated that this lense uses 40mm as filter diameter but no internet malls seem to sell 40mm diameter lense hood at all.
Am I doing something wrong? I am kind of confused

40 to 40.5 filter adapter ring, then 40.5 hood from ebay. Also, there are probably some 40 mm hoods on ebay, too.
I have done much the same thing. A 40mm to 43mm stepping ring (adapter) works well with a 43mm hood as well - these are sometimes easier to find than 40.5mm ones and are suitable for a 50mm f1.8 lens though they do let in a little more light at the margins. All of my LTM glass and similar lenses uses this kind of system with variations depending only on the lenses filter ring size: Canon 50mm f1.5, Canon 50mm f1.8 (both chrome and black/chrome), Leica 50mm f1.5, Nikkor 50mm f1.4, Industar 50mm f2.8, Jupiter 50mm f2. etc. I also use 43mm for some early 135mm lenses in Nikkor mount - thought no stepping ring is needed as these are natively 43mm.

The correct hood for that lens is either labeled "Canon Lens 50mm 1.8 35mm 2.8" or "Canon Lens 50mm" or "S-42"
These are 42mm outside clamp-on hoods and will also take a series VI filter inside them if you unscrew the adapter.

Search for Canon S-42 hood -that is the easiest way to find one.

Actual new 40mm screw-in hoods are very hard to find. partly because it is not a normal size. Also because you get too many false hits from 'for 40mm lens' descriptions.
But if you really want a new hood, your best plan is to get a 40mm-40.5mm step-up ring, then find a 40.5 screw-in hood.

This photo is crappy (mode with a phone) but it gives you the idea of a stepping ring adapting a 43mm hood to a 40mm filter thread on a Canon (in this case the 50mm f1.5). The hood happens to be an old one I found in a "junk" box at a camera store and picked up for $5. Similar hoods (though usually black) may be found online as new hoods from China. I must admit that lately I have had trouble finding ones like this that are for a 50mm lens - most that have this "funnel" shape seem to be for wider angle lenses and hence will be a bit less effective on a 50mm.thumbnail_20250901_121758.jpg

@ Roastedinwhat: If ya have a 3D-printer I'd like to design a fitting lenshood for your need. The thread should be a M40 x 0,5 mm.
I don't own a lens with an M40 x 0,5 thread, so it might take more than one test print. But it wouldn't be the first lens hood with a thread that I've "designed from afar" 😎

I have used the replacement LH-JX10 lens hood made for the Fujifilm Finepix X10 & X20 on my 40mm threaded Canon LTM lenses (28, 35 & 50mm). Its of a two part aluminium construction, adapter ring with 40mm male thread and a 52mm female thread allowing the latter size filters to be fitted, has narrow see through vents, then a hood section which screws onto the outside of the adapter ring. The hood section is quite shallow allowing for wide angle views. Its possible to dispense with this hood part and screw in a standard 52mm round hood instead. A low cost solution from Chinese sellers
