I've been looking for Jupiter-8's and Canon lenses to get a 50 for my Canon P, but they seem to have become scarce as of late.

Anyone know where to get one?

Note to mods, if someone wants to sell me one in the thread, I'll pay the listing fee for the classifieds, just so I get one... (if this isn't an option, feel free to edit my post)

If you don't find one here on RFF, Fedka is a reliable source of Soviet lenses. I used a J-8 for a while as my primary lens on my Canon P - it's a great combo.

Maybe somebody can borrow you one and charge you a monthly fee, hey Al? Like photoshop? You'll have to give it back though, and delete the pics, if you stop paying monthly.

Have no idea about Canon LTM glass, have enough of Canon Ls for my (D)SLRs. 🙂
But J-8... Common, what a big deal. Just buy one from hundreds offered on e-bay.
Old white ones, new black ones. All are availible and most of them as good as they are described by the seller. They aren't overpriced as J-3 ones, either.

Bought 2 J 8's from ebay user artemstore in the Ukraine! Very good and very reliable seller!

Can only recommend him though shipping takes 3 weeks, but that´s no this fault! Very good communication !

I have a Canon 50mm f1.8 I have been meaning to sell on the classifieds. I keep putting it off having never sold anything there before and hevent figured how to yet. Its the heavy chrome/brass version.

Hi, i strongly recommend you the canon 50mm f1.8 ltm...it´s simply superb.

Very sharp from 1.8 on.

Also has no focus shift.

The prices aren´t climbing.

it´s far, far better than the J-8

the canon 1.8 is a fantastic lens. i own two copies, the first obtained on a P, and i adore them for film. i prefer it to the 1.4 in many ways, and in almost all ways to the jupiter.

What should I put mine up on the classifieds for do you think?

The Canon 50mm f1.8 is a beautifully made lens. The build quality is unsurpassed, but with the newer black ones, you need to be careful. The lubricant used for the aperture outgasses and deposits on the adjacent glass surfaces, producing fog. Left uncleaned for a long period, this etches the coating, and becomes impossible to remove. This is a very common problem with the black 1.8's, but I have not seen it occur in the older and heavier all-chrome version.

I have bought black 1.8 lenses from time to time, and been able to clean them, but occasionally one is beyond fixing. It is wise to ensure that the vendor guarantees no fog in these lenses before buying one, unless you are willing to take that risk.

Cheers,
Dez

I saw a great looking 50mm 1.4 Canon lens go for $200 with shipping on eBay. There was a flood of them the other week and seemed to be cheaper then I got mine for.
Great lens though. J 8 though is great I heard and less expensive.

Since prices are going down for Canon LTM, I'd get a Canon lens and skip the Jupiter 8. They are nice Sonnars, but not spectacular like the Jupiter 3 (which will cost you about the same as a Canon 1.8).

For the most modern look and overall usefulness, I'd get the Canon 50/1.8. For a similar look but more speed, but more cost, the 50/1.4. If you want a fast Sonnar for cheap, I'd get the J-3 over the Canon 50/1.5, it has warmer tones and is not that expensive.

I'm quite happy with my Canon 50/1.4 LTM. It has a modern look, with good wide-open sharpness and it's fairly compact. The main downside is that the MFD is 1m, which is a bit restrictive at times...

They frequently show up in the classifieds here for around $300. If you're interested, you can see a number of samples from the lens on my blog or Flickr.
