Where to get a lens CLA'd in YVR & YYZ?

Hello,

I have a summicron 50 collapsable (that is almost double my age) I got from my friend since they just cleaned out their basement. The lens is in pretty good condition and there is no fungus or haze in the inner elements. But it is kinda oily and dirty. Also the front element's coating is rubbed off a bit. I was wondering if anyone knows where is a good place I can get the lens CLA'd in Vancouver or Toronto? (Preferably in Vancouver at the moment) I also saw online there are places to recoat the lens in the States and I was wondering if there is any place to do that, too. And is it really worth the money to do it? Thanks.

Maybe try cleaning it up yourself and using it a bit to see if it really needs a CLA. In Canada you can contact Kinderman for a CLA quote, but I don't know if they recoat lens elements. My guess is, no they don't. A lot of times if a used lens needs major work such as element recoating it may be cheaper to buy another used one.

Whatever Kindermann does, they'll charge more for it than DAG. They'll do it just as well, but you'll pay a premium. They haven't adjusted to the change in the dollar.

Most of my lenses have some degree of coating damage (or aren't even coated to begin with.) It all depends on what sort of conditions you use them in whether that matters: since I shoot mostly in the dark, I don't worry.

First example: uncoated 1941 Summitar
Second example: Canon 35/1.8 with significant coating damage

I will have to agree with you there but the request was for in Canada, specifically Van or TO. To stay in North America is really limiting your options or maybe also eliminating some risks. I have had good service from DAG in replacing beam splitters in a IIIc and IIIf and a CLA and a lens CLA. Kindermann would not do the replacement of beamsplitters at the time I was looking.

Horst Wenzel is a Hassablad and Rollei certified technician who works out of his house in Vancouver. He works on all sorts of classic equipment: Leica, Rollei, Nikon, Canon, Contax, etc. He used to run Vancam (I believe), is now retired, but he moved all the equipment into his house. He does great work and his prices are really good. He recently cleaned all the inner elements of a Canon Serenar I bought for next to nothing on eBay because it was full of haze. Now it's crystal clean. I think that he only charged me around $35.

Thanks for all the replies. I already have a current version of the Summicron 50. It is just that I got this collapsable version and I think it looks quiet nice. So I want to get it cleaned and lubricated. The lens is a bit dirty and I think it is from the dehydrated lubrications and also it is very stiff to change the aperture and the focus. I will try to see if Horst Wenzel is available first. I probably won't go through the trouble of having the lens recoated because the wear on the lens coating does not bother me that much so far...
