I remember Leitz had this really long lens which you mounted on a tripod and focused with a ground glass, before attaching your camera body to it.

Mango, since you're there and not here I can't introduce you to a rangefinder my father once worked on. It's a very acurate automatic rangefinder capable of tracking a moving target, it realy improved the system it was used with. A Leopard II tank 🙂

operational "issues" using a Jupiter 12 lens on my Pentax K1000.

You mean the 24K gold Leica R4 and Summicron lens sets? I can't imagine how inconveniently heavy that setup would be. ... Pendulum counterweights?
