Well-known
i would have to agree that the 'Loin is to be avoided for an out-of-towner. on my second trip to San Francisco, i was staying in a hotel on geary and jones(or thereabouts) after being told on the phone it was 'right off of union square.' there was a lot of 'business' going on in the hallway because all of the rooms were in use! the guy at the desk downstairs didn't seem to mind and i was stuck in my room until the next morning.
it's not an especially friendly place to take pictures of local street life either. there are a lot of people there that will not take kindly to being photographed by anyone. and with the recent rash of laptops, cameras and cel phones being grabbed off of people, it might even be a little dangerous.
on a positive note, this is supposedly the number 1 toursit city in the US, so you'll definitely not be bored. the haight is interesting once, golden gate park is nice, fisherman's wharf is interesting once, you can take a ferry to alcatraz or sausalito, or you can take a bay cruise for $25 or something that'll take you out underneath the Gate. if you have a car, check out the marin headlands, almost every famous picture of the golden gate bridge was taken from up there(bring a nice long lens though.) and if you walk across the bridge, bring a jacket, it gets cold and windy up there.
good luck...
