Where would you take you it?

Last summer on my first trip down the Allagash I left my MP home. Instead I took a Nikon P&S and Nikon FA. The trip and photos ops were spectacular but the photos could have been so much more, especially the digital ones. My son and I are going again this summer. Should I take the M8? After all it's insured.
I kept the FA tucked away in a dry bag for use only when on land, but kept the p&s in the dry hole in the cockpit, quick to grab, and also quick to get wet. It never got wet, and I got some great pictures from the kayak. I've also been considering a user iii since it is small and would fit into the dry-hole. What do you think?

I just bought a vintage Nikonos V for kayaking. I generally only photograph with digitals, but this seemed like a great option for this use.

I would get a better digital P&S for the water. Or a better pocket cam if you want to shoot film. Taking an expensive camera in a kayak on an extended trip is just asking for trouble.

I took mine sailing in the Bahamas for a week. Salt,moist and humid. No problem at all on both cameras. My theory is that this is a camera to be used, not pampered. But I have to admit I kept them in a Pelican Case with Silicagel in the night.
If you get a Lowepro Omnitraveller bag, it will fit into that Pelican case perfectly, as dunking will not do the camera much good, I admit. Or,alterantely, an Ewa Marine flexible camera housing, though a bit unpractical, is perfectly watertight and even suitable for diving.

On a sailboat with a cabin it is rather easy to keep a camera dry and there is little risk for it to go overboard. Except really bad weather, where you start to get more concerned about the boat and yourself than about your camera there is hardly anything to get worried about. You put it away in a safe place inside the cabin and that's it.

On a kayak, the M8 should withstand about the same level of use/abuse as your SLR. As long as it is insured and in a dry bag I'd vote for not missing the shots.

I spent 40 days canoeing through Canada last summer and traveled over 350 miles.

My M8 stayed dry and protected from impact in a Pelican 1600 case along with 7 batteries, four lenses and 18GB of memory.

Came home with thousands of pictures.
