Bill... speak to us... please! Are you really there? These folks really miss you... and they sound sincere!

Hmm, seems I am back. Sorry, I feel like a voyeur. I could log in but could not post, the software said I had not been validated. I thought it meant I was suspended, and given recent events, I decided maybe it was for the best and tried to move on. I followed RFF for awhile, but eventually began to drop off - when you can't comment, it gets boring. Cap'n Slack kept me updated and told me about this thread. He's the one who told Joe that I had been under the impression that I was banned. I guess I wasn't. OK, then.

Thank you all for the kind words; it was kind of like attending my own funeral. Very strange in a way.

I realize that not all I have to say is welcome here, I'll try to check that. It doesn't change my beliefs, but I will do my best to keep my fingers off the keyboard when certain topics come up.

As to speculation on what I am doing now, I was and remain an IT professional in a bank, as accused by my detractor. I am also making a serious effort to make money from my photography, and am finding a small level of success there. I have paid gigs with some regularity now, and it is becoming somewhat routine to get paid. I declared myself a business with my 2005 taxes, and filed a Schedule C showing a small loss for the year. Next year, I believe I will be paying taxes on a small profit. Either way, my photography and writing are no longer just a hobby for me.

And that's the news from Wilson, NC.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

As an victim of his wrath, I do not miss him at all! It'd been a long time ago since I was physically threatened until he did so here. Anyone who thinks that is acceptable behavior here or anywhere needs some kind of professional help. 😡

george,
perhaps we could all start fresh and move on from here?

i for one would like to see that from all parties.

That's what I call irony, an IT pro turning photo pro locked out of a photo forum by a software glitch 🙂

Welcome back Bill!

Joe,

I have no intention of going away nor am I interested in letting "bygones be bygones". Not in the face of that kind of provocation.

Jorge and you should consider the liability if some physical harm comes to me from this individual who has used this site as a public forum to threaten me.

george,

first, i don't think anyone has asked you leave. in fact i did just the opposite.
second, i am a moderator only, i doubt that i am considered liable for anything here.
not any great concern to me as i would have to have something for someone to take it away.

third, i can only assume that you have never lost your temper and blasted away at someone...oh, wait a moment, you have done that here, a few times.
and no, i don't think you have threatened violence against anyone but you are not a simple victim here either.

anyway, i'm a kid who grew up on the streets of new york, i'm not a new york lawyer so i don't intend to engage in a debate about this.

my simple philosophy is that you can carry this around and feel miserable or let it go, move on and feel better about the world in general.

peace out,
joe

Spoken like a true lawyer 😕

No, spoken like someone who's been threatened with physical harm.

And I also do not miss those interminable FID rants. Are we going to have all that crap start up again?

I guess the peaceful month here has passed.

First. Welcome back.
Second, I hope you'll still be able to get some enjoyment from photography after moving it from hobby to business. People have often told me I should try to sell some of my photos, but I've always resisited because it's a hobby that gives me a break from the "make more money" world and I feared photography would lose its theraputic value if I made it a business.

I wouldn't worry. My experience is that most people who actually want to do you physical (or other) harm skip the threatening stage and generally go straight to the harm ... unannounced.

I haven't threatened anyone with assault. I offered consensual mutual combat, which boxers, wrestlers, and bar-room brawlers do all the time, and which is perfectly legal.

Physical violence is what happens during the mutual combat if both parties agree and combat is engaged - it is a consequence of the agreement, not a threat. If there is no consent, there is no violence, hence there is no threat.

I hereby revoke the offer, for the record and in front of these assembled witnesses. I won't fight you no matter how much you beg me to.

Now I'm starting to remember why I visit NYC only on rare occasion... and then leave quickly. Youz guys are just too intense for me.

So, how exactly does that 'ignore' feature work? Can I choose "ignore all New Yorkers withtoo much testosterone" and "ignore all lonely farmgirls" or do I have to specficy them by name??

It was a good month, George...

This isn't a barroom it is a website. I do not brawl and have no interest in anything regarding you.

To remain here, I have to tolerate your presence. But I do not think I am alone in not welcoming your return.

I'm done with this thread - there are more interesting things to deal with here.

Personally I believe Bill decided to take a break from RFF and rangefinder photography.

Yes on the first, and no on the second. I use my Bessa R all the time! Just did a nice set of 'available light' photos of a bluegrass band with Bessa R, Tri-X pushed in Diafine, and my Canon 50mm f1.4.

He was heading toward digital because it suited him and what he was doing with photography. My guess is he may come back if he becomes reinterested in film/rangefinder photography and he has spare time. He also sounded to be quite busy in work.

I'm using digital for most paying business now - the workflow speedup is what makes it profitable for me. I remain a firm fan of film and use it whenever I do my own personal work, especially B&W.

And yes, I'm hopping! Ask Cap'n Slack, he keeps trying to get me to go to this B&W show in Cary, NC, and I've begged off like three times now. Wanted to go, but people kept tossing money at me to take pitchers.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks
