Which 40mm for the CLE?

whoa whoa whoa -- that'd be a minimum focusing distance of 1.8m! 😱 (or -0.2m, if deducting the "other" way)

I just saw a 40mm Nokton first-hand this last weekend, and I remember seeing the minimum focusing distance at 0.7m 😕

Are there variants (other than "Classic" and "Multicoated") of this lens?

Sorry, Gabriel, if I wasn't clear:

- Nokton: min focus .7m
- Summicron-C, Rokkor: min focus .8m
- {Leica,Minolta} CL, Minolta CLE: min. focus .8m

BTW, both Noktons (S.C and M.C) are called "Classic".

You can't beat the VC 40/1.4 for 'bang for the buck.' I owned the SC version, the Rokkor 40 and the Summilux Aspherical 35mm all at the same time, and the VC quickly became my favorite of the three. Preferred over the Rokkor for being one stop faster, and over the Summilux for being $2,000 cheaper. 😀

It's not quite as well-controlled as the 35 'lux wide open, but it's not a $2k difference. Under the conditions one is likely to use such a lens on a film body, anyway, ultimate lens performance is not the limiting factor.

The only real downside to the lens is that the VC 40 has a crude focus feel compared to either of the other two lenses.

I've attached a pic I shot at f2.0 with one of the three lenses, see if you can tell, definitively, which one it is. Should be easy considering the price difference, right? 😉

My vc 40 f1.4 has replaced the rokkor... as my leica m 28 2.0 has replaced the rokkor and the 90 elmarit m f2.8 has replaced the rokkor. No anti-minolta because I love the camera...modern speed and quality has simply won the day from a lens standpoint and the camera proudly and capably wields the best in glass. My 40 is the multi-coated and despite having the lens shade I have yet to use it and I cannot complain about the results.

Congrats on the CLE...best camera in the world...I've recently liquidated all my Leica except a few lenses I'll use on the CLE. And I've got enough CLE bodies to get me through any electrical breakdowns!
