Which 50mm lens for vacation?

I would have to say the CV because it's so compact and handles beautifully (if you like tabs, which I do). Having said this I only just got mine, so not too sure about the kind of images is produces (may be too 'modern' for what you have in mind).

Planning to take:
CV21 wide
Canon 28f3.5 very small and light
Summaron 35f3.5 very small and light, old world results
CV40f1.4 for speed
a 50mm lens or 2, or maybe just the Elmar f3.5
probably not an Elmar 90f4

I could get by without the 28 and 35, but they are just so small, why not.

I usually take my CV 50/2.5 when I travel. But if you're already taking a CV 40 and want something for an "older" look, I'd take the Summitar - I have an uncoated one and I love the results from it. (I can't comment on the uncoated Elmar, because I've never used one, but I suspect that might actually give a more "classic" old look - the Summitar is somewhat idiosyncratic).

There are no shortcuts in life, I'm simply going to have to do some lens testing. Not only is lens rendition subjective as to whether it is pleasing or not, individual lens sample variation also needs to be accounted for.

Try thinking about the character of the nation and compare it to the lens. If you are going to be in contemporary France with it's sophistication and modernity then a sharper, modern lens is appropriate. If, on the other hand, you are seeking out the remnants of the fourth republic or earlier then perhaps a period lens may be more appropriate?

Where are you going to, Raid? Another chance to meet in Germany?
(Sorry for the OT.)

No; this time it will be Jordan-Sadui Arabia- Syria.
I hope to visit Germany another year.
I had fun meeting with you!
