Which camera should I take for a hike?

As to the hike, try to go up the col, through the boulder fields, and then get on the rim trail to go back down, cutting down through the aspens straight down on a spur trail. We did it the other way, and it was much more strenuous. Here is the rim trail going the "wrong" way, towards the peak.

Ah, shoot, why not just take a Leica X (whatever) and be done with it all?🙂 Small, light, super capable. That is what they were made for right? If it rains, carry some baggies!

I must try the X1 with shooting panos...Hmmm...

In my opinion you may search for an M4-P Everest edition...
It is definitely designed for serious mountaineers...

To be honest I have carried P&S digital, EOS 3 film SLR, ZI ZM... But I think that my latest decision to just bring with me my Olympus trip on the hike it makes each excursion more fun...

Call Lens Rental and have them send you one of their Pentax 645Z rentals with a 35mm lens. The resulting photographs will be well worth the rental fee.

If not, pack the Q.

I was thinking along the lines of an Xpan or GX617. But the 645Z is also a good choice. I'd take the 25mm.

Oh, and a bottle of Caol Ila.

I have lugged around my Olympus EM-1 plus lenses and tripod, etc. on hikes. I also have taken the M240 with the silver 50mm Lux ASPH, the silver 35mm Cron ASPH and the 28mm F2.8 Elmarit plus filters, etc. On hikes as well as urban photo expeditions.

I'll take the M240 plus lenses again and maybe a sturdy monopod that can double as a walking stick. However, I have not tried the Q.... I'd say take them both separately in a couple of trial hikes or walks and see which one will give you the best images. Regardless of the weight, etc. I'd take the one I liked to shoot best with... Good luck

I'm home! The hike to took 8 hours and killed me. I'll explain more when I have the photo's processed. That small X weighted 25 pounds when I was done... HaHa

Photo's to come. By the way I did complete it and make it to the top.

Jim

Beautiful photo! Don't expect mine to compete with this. Thank you.
Yours will be great.

I just drag my M9 around so much with nice glass, something has to turn out once in awhile 🙂

one more from the same evening:

Last light over Bluff Creek by unoh7, CV 90/3.5

For this ride and climb I had 18-28-50-90. Sometimes I'll go 28-50 or 28-90. Always a struggle, but nothing like having some serious documentation to inspire you in the future. 🙂

Mission Accomplished ! A toast with Jameson Irish Whiskey

First I would like to thank all of you for helping me with this hike. Not only did you give me great camera selection advice but you shared with me your take on what this hike is all about. That it's not just running up the hill to take photo's from the top and running down. You were absolutely right the view from the top would be disappointing and it was. We could barely see each other let alone the landscape below. I decided on the Leica X 113. It worked perfectly and since my hands were frozen most of the way the Auto setting and auto focus saved me.

How did this start? My buddy Scott and I are cycling friends. We have ridden together for 8 years. Met on a bike ride in northern Arizona. He has become one of my best friends. Scott retired from teaching school a couple of years ago, his cycling strength has increased with the extra riding he does. I still work so I'm limited. We have started to hike once a week in addition to biking. Our third buddy Dale is an avid hiker and it has rubbed off on us. Dale was not able to join us for this trip.

Scott and I challenge each other on every ride and hike. He wanted to take the chairlift up and then scout the top for a future hike on Humphrey's. You can see the ski runs to the right of the photo. I told him why practice lets just do it from the bottom, he was not convinced until he found that they closed the trail from the chair lift to the Humphrey's trail. We are on!!!

Humphrey's is the highest peak in Arizona. If you follow the top of the above photo from the saddle which is the lowest point on top just left of the ski runs along the edge to the left you end at Humphrey's peak. The trail to the saddle is tough, the trail to Humphrey's is..... Ok you'll see that in a few days.

So here is my Story

August 7, 2015 Snowbowl Ski Resort just north of Flagstaff. 9:00 am

Mountain Registration by Jim Crutcher, on Flickr
Scott follows all the rules and he is registering us on the trail. Why would they want to know?

Is that a Kilt?? by Jim Crutcher, on Flickr
This guy motor's by us like we are standing still. He was singing to himself in non-English. Once out of earshot I ask Scott "Heh is that a skirt he's wearing" Scott ever the gentleman reminds me with a few F.. S... Head words that it's a Kilt and he has one too being from Scottish heritage...

Weird is all I say.
