I've been drafted in my company's team on this year's Oxfam Trailwalker Hike in the Harz forest in Germany. Ok, not drafted, but another colleage cancelled at short notice so I agreed to join.
The hike is 100km long, and our team of 4 has 30 hours time to finish. There will be short breaks in between, but it's pretty much nonstop.
The others looked in disbelief that I want to weigh myself down with a film camera, but there is no way I'm going to miss out. I'm pretty excited about the photographic opportunities in the outdoors, and I think grainy b&w lends itself perfectly to the physical and mental strain.
I've been mulling about what I should take with. Medium format, of course not. I'd be really unhappy if I drop my ZM in the mud. An SLR would be cool, but...
The final vote goes to the Hexar AF. It's durable and relatively light weight. I'll appreciate the automatic film loading when I change film while walking. And I'll appreciate autofocus when I'm so weary all I can do is point the camera in the general direction of interest. And 35mm is a reasonable tradeoff for landscapes and people photos.
Now, I just have to work out what film to take with.
