Just to add another option, the Sony Xperia Arc with 8mpx Exmor sensor:

It isn't that good with backlight, but the resolution is quite good. Straight from camera.

in good light it is great, also straight from camera.

and just for RFF a black and white Instagram version ;-)

I don't like phone pictures. But what do I know, I also don't like compacts, so, don't take my advise for anything....

Another vote for the iPhone 4s. I also recommend getting the Camera+ Ap for it. I've got a bunch of camera aps on mine, and that's the ap I consistently use the most.

I would like some manual control, like, an actual shutter speed setting. I'd sell my digi compacts for that.
