Just curious which collapsible lenses fit the Canon P? Also...is it possible to use anyway and just not collapse the lens. Maybe some users out there have some kind of shealth to prevent the lens from collapsing into the camera.

Any suggestions would be most helpful,

I have a 7 rather than a P, but I understand the light baffles are the same. I use a collapsable I-22 on it quite often with no trouble and test mounted an uncoated Elmar the other day as well. I expect the same will be true of the collapsible 'cron I have coming to me.

The oldest J-12 lenses can have a problem. The rear element was slightly bigger prior to 1958 and so doesn't fit. However, the more recent ones fit fine. That's the only lens fit issue I am aware of with the P & 7, so perhaps that was what you were thinking of?

Yes...I had heard about the Jupiter lenses. I guess I just didn't want to buy something that would damage my P.

Thanks for the info...but how do you like the I-22? Is it comparable to the Elmar? If I were to look for a 'cron, what kind should i be looking for? A collapsable one or a solid one?

Thanks again!

IME, which is fairly limited so not just a grain but about a feeping pound of salt is due here, the Industar (10, 22, 26 & 50) collapsibles are indistingusable from coated Elmars if they are in good condition. This is, obviously, not always the case with FSU lenses, so some care is required. The older uncoated Elmars have a distinctive look that the coated FSU lenses can not duplicate.

As for the 'cron, from everything I've read it should simply be a matter of the style you prefer. Do you want to have to remember to pull it out everytime you are looking at making a shot? There are some (Me!) who do - it's a great way to be forced to slow down and double check everything else. But for a more HCB/Capa/Photojournalist approach, it can be that the rigid 'cron is a better bet because it just one less thing to have to worry about. I have a thing for collapsibles, but that doesn't make them anymore practical in the "real world"- or less practical either... 😱

Hope this helps,

William

Thank You, THANK You.

Thank You, THANK You.

I absolutely love this thread. I've been wanting to ask the same question for a donkey's age, but never got around to it. You see, I'm spending WAY too much of my time lusting after Summitars for use on my P. So, now, I'm off to see the 'bay about a nice I-22, instead.

Because, unless I've already mentioned it elsewhere, I've got NO money.

Thanks, guys, for the always-relevant information.

Cheers,

One bit on the I-22 and the 7 - the infinity stop binds up on the extra flange for the 50/.95 lens. No big deal to take out the plunger, but just so you are aware of it.

I just put a 50/2 summitar on my VT-deluxe today, and it came into contact with the light baffles on the top when trying to collapse. Don't know if there is much variation among cameras/lenses, but it barely hit, so maybe it's no problem with others--enough of a problem with mine so that I passed up on the lens.

On my Canon 7s, Elmar and Summar the three lugs can hit the top baffle if rotated to the wrong position. Summitar and Summicron no trouble, because you can't get any lugs pointing up, the little ball keeps you safe.
