My girlfriend has fallen completely in love - with my G12 that is, and me being such a kindhearted person has of course given it to her as a gift ;)

So trouble starts (no, not with the girlfriend) - I need a a new digital point-n-shoot. I am tempted by the Canon G1X, being used to the Canon interface, but then again, there might be another camera out there, that fits the requirements better: Also I am not all that updated as I have not been camera shopping for a couple of years (digicams that is). So this is what I am looking for:
  • Has to fit in a jacket pocket - as it will mainly be used for holidays and hiking (e.g. a PEN with the standard zoom is not pocketable in my book)
  • Image quality at least on par with the G12
  • Viewfinder (optical or EVF)
  • Zoom - just something moderate, fixed or interchangeable
  • Low noise levels up to at least ISO 800
  • Strap lugs
  • Price range: 4-500 £
So ladies and gents - any suggestions?

Fuji X10.

I really like the Leica D-Lux 4. I don't know that much about the later D-Lux models. The access to manual control is a high value in my book - "manual" controls that come through menu systems aren't at all what I want. The LX5 is nice, too, but after a week or so with it, I'm back to the D-Lux 4.

Another vote for the LX5. Composing and shooting with LCD is fine, didn't miss a viewfinder at all when shooting with it. In fact, raising a camera that small to the eye just doesn't seem right.

Finderless: Ricoh GRD's

:D

There's a whole appreciative thread on here and it's got shots in there that made me question my expensive Leica gear

Yep, Fuji X10 is the way to go... even over the Canon. The Ricoh has no zoom, so people aren't looking at your criteria.

Just wanted to put a finger in the cake :) there really are not much P&S in digital world. Most of them are fully featured cameras - just more compact than our dads used to carry around. Maybe rear curtain flash sync option is only feature not present on typical compact. In terms of simplicity - retrieve, point and shoot - film cameras have less options to adjust, that's for sure. No, I'm not starting FvsD thingie, but with digital I have to watch also ISO and WB (in JPG mode) in addition to usual exposure, comp. and focus - and that definitely not simply pointing....if this means something else than pointing menu choices!

Nikon V1 10-30mm kit - Available for £299 while stocks last (e.g. calumet)

LX7, two important features. Aperature ring around the lens and there is an optional filter adapter that does not make the camera any bigger unlike the contraptions for the canon G series.

Nice deal on the LX7, very nice indeed, bit I am in Denmark, and parcels from the US always get caught by the Danish Customs Service, so the price would more than double :bang:
