which first lens?

if you are an xp1 owner...which one lens did you buy first, the 18 or the 35?

they both look pretty good to me but the 35 seems the more popular one.
i'm just curious.
 
I bought the 35 first. But given by middle of next month 2 more lenses will be available, some may pick the zoom because of the xe1 kit.

Joe: I got the 35. But then again, I liked 50s back in the days of 35mm film. The 35 is good enough that although I have used a lot of different Leica glass on the XP1 with an adapter I got from Stephen, I haven't really been tempted in that focal length. . .
 
The 35. And it's the only XF lens I have so far.

I just know I will want some of the other ones coming later, 'specially the 14 and the 56 over the current 18 and 60, so I've been content to wait and learn the body and that one lens.

Won't be long now!
 
I see myself growing with this system, so it was either or, for now. In future probably both and then some. As it is I got the 18mm, since I have been having fun with the 28mm on the M4-2. It just works for me. I did of course get the M-adapter, so I can use my small host of M/LTM lenses.
 
I was thinking. If u use photo cataloging/editing SW or SW that can search your EXIF data in your digital photo library, would it not be better to c which lens u use the most?

In aperture I can setup a search filter using EXIF data and 35mm equiv lens.

The 35 may be sharper than the 18, but what matters is what is really your proffered shooting lens.

Ps Since I was an early adopter, I picked the 35 not because it is my most used, but because early writeups showed it to be sharpest and if I did not like it, most likely the easiest setup to sell off. Now fast forward, u can handle xp1 at your local camera store, there are tons of writeups on the camera and lenses.

I don't have the 18mm, but I'll give you my experience with the other two current primes.

The 35 1.4 is simply too good to ignore, impressive already wide open with a good, consistent frame, good border resolution, minimal distortion, good contrast and of course, pleasing OOF areas. If you're a 50s guy this should be a no-brainer.

The 60 2.4 is also very good and does close-ups, product, portraiture and landscape mostly without ever skipping a beat. Very good IQ, a little slow at F/2.4, but that's understandable given its semi-macro nature. Handy lens.

but it's not the lens most often used but the images that are your favourite.
my 'best' image is from a 21mm lens on the rd1...my most used lens is the 40...and i have lots of good images from it...but the 21 image i see as my best.
i disliked the 28 on my rd1...but generally like a 28...eventually sold the 21 and the 28 and settled on a 25...
as for the xp-1...that 35 is fantastic from what i see posted on the net...the 18 has a luke warm rep but it seems good to me.

but the bigger question for me is...buy an interchangeable body with lens now or wait for the fixed lens but (i think fantastic)...rx1
the focus speed of the fuji makes me pause while the quick focus of the rx100 makes me think the rx1 will be fast as well.

For me over the years order of most used and favorite lens in 35 equiv....
40 - 21 - 24/25 - 35 - 90 - 50 - 135 - 200 - 15/16 - 300
Including dslrs. so the 35 is as close as it gets until the 28 pancake finally ships :D

I think u need to rent a Fuji w/ 35 for a week.

i would own both fuji and sony if i had the $$...the fuji was a lock until the sony was announced.
 
The Sony RX1 is going to be mighty fine, but the X-E1 with a 35/1.4 will give it a serious run for the money.

First, The X-E1 has an EVF, the RX1 doesn't.

Second, for narrow depth of field, a 35/2 full frame will provide about the same DOF as a 35/1.4 on APS.

Third, the price! Buy 2 for one. :)

Joe, I have the XP1 with the 18, 35, and 60mm lenses. All are excellent. Period.

Now... rather than jump for the RX1, I think you should first wait for Fuji's 23/1.4 and 28/2.8 pancake. These would be equivalent to a 35/1.4 and a 42/2.8... right down your alley! And here's the thing... that pancake lens matched with the X-E1 would be a superb street camera and would only cost roughly $1600 for the set! And the 23/1.4 for what I expect will be another $800 and you're still less out-of-pocket than the RX1.
 
Right now i only have the 35mm, as 50mm was my most used lens in my Canon system. It is simply excellent, although it shows chromatic abberation wide open (but less than my Canon 50mm f1.4).

I didn't buy the 18mm because i was not sure to like the system, but it is my next Fuji purchase...
 
I bought them both with the xp1. I use the 35 a lot more than the 18, but when I "force" myself to take it out with the 18, I am always pleased with the results.

Since my first RF was a used nikon with only a 1.4 50mm "normal" lens, I somehow feel that is the "right" lens if you only have one...but that is probably because that was all I had 45 years ago :)

They are both great, but if I could only have one, it would be the 35 (then again, that was easy since I still have my x100) :)

I bought the 35 first. Then I ordered the 18 from Amazon but they accidentally shipped me the 60. Naturally I kept that and again ordered the 18. I like all three but the 35 is my favorite.
