Meh. Overrated and over priced. Couldn't wait to offload my FLE once I got a ZM 35/1.4.

MC - multi coated
SC - single coated

The SC version of the lens is engraved "SC" on the front plate to distinguish it from the MC version.

That's beacuse the siding boards are bowed and the lens is making them look straight!

Jokes aside, I love this little lens, but I can't deny that in straight-on shots horizontal lines bow at the ends. Fortunately, in the type of pictures I take it's rarely a problem.

I see a difference with SC and MC nikors. Less flair and more contrast. SC does not increase dynamic range on digital. Non coated Leica seems to have shadow detail higher up the curve, but it is flat and lacks crisp detail.

I see SC offered for slightly less. This could be interesting for me. I look for fast, compact and not expensive 35. Here is nothing but Nokton. But every time I look on ugly bokeh, swirl, distortion and focus shift... I have to remind myself about crappy Lux glow at 1.4. And it is 2K $ lens. 🙂.
Looks like Nokton is still only option for small and fast 35...

The Nokton, SC or MC, is certainly a good deal for a fast 35mm. The barrel distortion isn't a big issue unless your are photographing architecture, and the bokeh calms down if you stop down to f2 and avoid minimum focus distance. If you are shooting digitally, the distortion can easily be corrected in post processing.

A good alternative is the slightly slower 35mm f1.7 LTM, smooth and calm bokeh, less distortion.

Looking at examples from this lens, over and over, again and again. It doesn't really shows any significant difference between SC and MC. Any I could see.

I'm not finding post-production crops which comes with distortions correction as "easily". It is degrading my framing. I'm not from "6x6, place it in the middle school".
I do have elements which are sending the message on the edges of the frame.
Distortions from this lens seems to be on the edge of my tolerating limit. Very visible, but, not 7A 35 f2 extreme. 🙂

If I focus close, I tend to use f5.6 to have object in focus, not just part of it.
Does swirl of bokeh goes away with smaller apertures aw well?

I often use 35 lenses as scale focus, not RF. At f2.8-f8 apertures. But focus shift only comes with RF. Right?

35 f1.7 LTM is little bit too large for my needs, will need workaround for focus tab and too many of them recently come with fogging.

I went on travel with 50 1.5 lens on previous week and 50mm was limiting me more than giving advantage, while f1.5 was most valuable. I don't have to push 400 film...

I guess, the only way to find out is as usual. I should buy this lens. 🙂 Here is no any other f1.4 35 for this price. And I'm very limited on $ now...

35 2.0 nikkors, Ai. Both MC & SC. Little difference except for backlight where flare control is better. Flare has more to do with lens design than coatings.

The BIG difference is from no coating to single coat where you get better contrast and shadow detail .

i had both the 40sc and mc and did controlled side by side testing.
I could not see any difference.

Sold both as i prefer the Summicron 40 f2
